Great info Marcus.

IIRC, there were some very minor cosmetic changes - in general - between the 2001 and 2002 model years.

1. The wheel center caps changed from all painted silver to painted with the chrome star.

2. There was an internal emergency trunk release installed on the '02.

3. Wheels - someone may want to jump in here - some CLK430s were equipped with thicker 5-spoke AMG alloys (not Monoblock IIs) vs. some that had thinner 5-spoke AMG alloys. Not sure exactly when the change happened.

4. Exhaust - again, someome may have definitive info here - some CLK430s had a single chrome exhaust tip. Some had a single black exhaust tip. Not sure when the change happened.

Some additional data.

I am not sure about the wheel center caps, so Chappy is probably correct. I know that my wife's 03 C2430 had them.

My 01 has an internal emergency trunk release installed and a single chrome exhaust I just checked my car and they are there!

The wheels on 01 was the 17 inch thin spoke AMG and on the 02 CLK430 it was the 17 inch ultrathin spoke AMG, the monoblocks came on the AMG CLK55.

I personally think the nicest stock wheel on the CLK is the 17 inch ultrathin spoke AMG, but that is my choice.

I also am considering buying a w208 (convertible).

Marcus, the spec/option sheet was infinitely helpful. Any idea where those are available for 00, 01, and 03? Or are they so similar its a moot point?

I tried searching for a model change guide or something of the sort, but wasn't able to find anything. Beneath is quoted information from edmunds, does anyone see something they think is wrong?

What's New for 2000
The CLK430 Convertible debuts, reminding us, for a premium price, what a drop-top muscle car from the '70s was like. Turn-signal indicators have been added to exterior mirrors, stability control is standard on all models, automatics get TouchShift manual gear selection and TeleAid emergency cellular service is standard. A new instrument cluster and multifunction steering wheel are added, and buyers can opt for the confusing COMAND navigation/phone/trip computer/sound system. CLK320s benefit from exterior cosmetic changes including new wheels, while 430s are enhanced inside with new black bird's eye maple wood trim. Free maintenance for the duration of the warranty is now included.

What's New for 2001
TeleAid comes standard on every CLK model this year, and the front windows lower slightly when you open the doors and seal (foop!) tight when you close them.

What's New for 2002
No changes this year.
So, since 2002 is wrong...its probably wrong in other places.

Are there any known issues with the car? Anything I should specifically looking for when shopping (I am mechanically inclined enough to investigate anywhere in the car).

2002 CLK430
I have no idea where that information would be available for other years. I'm a writer and got my information from the MB press kit. I'm going to guess that Edmunds gets their information from the same press kits. The trick is getting someone to hold on to all of that stuff for years on end, and then to actually read through it. That's why the Edmunds site is wrong. No one wants to comb through 5 year old kits for every model of every car in the US. My employer used to sell Automania, which had all the information for every new car available in the US. Automania also had prior year information, but not as detailed. We had hoped people would buy them annually, but that didn't work as planned.

My 2000 press kit is either in my office at work, or buried with some old kits here at home, so for tonight I’ll limit myself to the 2001 and 2002 kits which are handy. The 2001 and 2002 MB press kits came in two forms; a hardcopy and a digital copy. The 2001 hardcopy was much larger than the 2002, as most of the info for 2002 was digital. At a glance, the 2001 hardcopy kit appears to be five times as large. Both kits have a lot of information. It’s not easy to compare them. Fortunately, both the 2001 and 2002 press kits have “What’s New For 2001/2002” sections.

For the 2001 CLK I see:

Tele Aid with new functions new and standard in every Mercedes; primarily a safety feature, but has multiple convenience functions, as well. New functions for 2001 include remote door unlocking, alarm activation notification, remote diagnostics.
à benefit: Emergency calling system contacts central monitoring station upon the deployment of any airbag. Uses a dedicated two-way cell phone line and crash-secure antennae. Local emergency services can be sent to the scene, as car model and color are coded in and location is known through GPS tracking.
InfoServices custom web-based information through COMAND (optional on cars equipped with COMAND).
à benefit:Provides custom-tailored news, stock quotes, sports, weather, personal notes.
Digital TIMEPORT™ cellular telephoneavailable for all Mercedes-Benz models.
à benefit:Dual-band, dual-modes allow nationwide one-rate carrier service.
Revised SmartKeynew on C-, E-, S- CL-, CLK-Class.
àbenefit:Lighter weight, more compact.
The new Debuting CLK55 AMG adds:
· 342-hp hand-assembled AMG 5.5-liter V8 engine
· AMG suspension, racing-derived brakes, AMG Monoblock 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and tires
· AMG aerodynamic package, AMG-exclusive interior package

The “What’s New For 2002” is completely different than it was in 2001. For the CLK, 2002 reads:

CLK-Class: New CLK55 AMG Cabriolet model expands the line to three coupes and three Cabriolets:
  • CLK55 AMG Cabriolet: with 349-hp handbuilt V8 engine, standard Charcoal designo Edition Nappa leather interior, unique multipiece alloy wheels, AMG suspension, racingderived
  • brakes.
  • CLK320 now available with Sport package.
  • CLK430 coupe and Cabriolet models receive new five-spoke alloys wheels.
These press kits were available when we first got the cars, which was late in the previous year's run. For example, the 2008's are currently available to the press. This being the case, 2001 or 2002 mid-year updates would have to be pulled and saved from the MB press site, which I didn't do here or at my website.
