Angry Need your expertise!!!!

Guys

Just had a rattling start in my car CLK430 a couple of weeks ago...YEAH the damn catalytic converter. The STEALERSHIP quoted me $2900 for the fix without labor!!!! These ah's should be given a beating...

Anyways...I checked alot of the old threads but I still have some questions to determine whsat course to follow so here goes:
1. What exhaust system would you recommend?
2. Does this system include catalytic converters and resonator?
3. Can I just eliminate the the cat converter and put a straight pipe? What if I eliminate 2 converters instead of all 4?
4. Should I replace the cat converter with a high flow aftermarket? How many would I need 1 or 4?
5. What is the diameter of the piping in a stock CLK430? Should I increase the size 1/4-1/2"?
6. Where can I get OEM parts for mercedes at a good price since OEMPARTSDIRECT seems to not be available?
7. Any other recommendation is welcome

Please share experiences and knowledge to help out a fellow CLK owner.

my car has 82K miles so i just missed the warranty coverage

Magnaflow’s 599xx series metal substrate converters sell for $115. They flow a lot better than the factory ceramic cats. The cats should be replaced in pairs. Either both primaries, or both secondaries. I would NOT increase the tubing size at the cat. The four cats on your car are made up of two OEM parts. The right side pipe has a list price of about $1400 and the left lists for $650. Trademotion will sell you the OEM parts for about 20% off list. Just be glad you don’t have a CLK320. The right side pipe on a 320 lists for $2500, and the left lists for $800.

I have the exact same problem and I am going to get the new cats from Evosport . com. They are only 275 for each side and higher flowing!! I am going to do a new exhaust and remove the resonator at the same time. So its gonna take me a bit longer to save up for the little project.

Anyways...I checked alot of the old threads but I still have some questions to determine whsat course to follow so here goes:
1. What exhaust system would you recommend? My first pick would be the one I just sold Eisenman Race!! Next choice would be a custom magnaflow
2. Does this system include catalytic converters and resonator? No cats and resonator will never be included with the purchase of an exhaust unless you buy it specifically made like that.
3. Can I just eliminate the the cat converter and put a straight pipe? What if I eliminate 2 converters instead of all 4?You can elimiate it of course BUT...you will probabyly fail your emissions test and almost certainly fail your visual emissions test when they get underneath to check.
4. Should I replace the cat converter with a high flow aftermarket? YES How many would I need 1 or 4? If replacing with a higher flowing one then replace all 4
5. What is the diameter of the piping in a stock CLK430? Should I increase the size 1/4-1/2"? ?? Someone please help me out here
6. Where can I get OEM parts for mercedes at a good price since OEMPARTSDIRECT seems to not be available? I need this info as well
7. Any other recommendation is welcome

Gregory...thanks for also sharing the info! I actually went to shop and they had available the magnaflow so I just had them installed and left the other pair stock (those with the O2 sensor). Cars sound exactly like stock and no real difference felt. I am considering taking off the resonator and changing the other two cats in the future. At least it should sound better...

To be completely honest I would go the cheapest route to fix the cats. Go to a good muffler shop, or welding shop, or shop that does roll cages and get them to open your cats, gut them, and weld em closed. Visually you'll be good to go but emission inspection might not make it. Spend your money on a good exhaust system. I would reccommend Eisenmann since I just put one on. Do not go with the race version as I am finding it is VERY loud in the cabin. If you go with straight pipes and remove the cats completely get ready for a huge sound increase...especially if you change out exhaust too. With 82K on the clock why bother spending that much money on something you can do cheaper. Put the money to use elsewhere, like headers! Good luck whatever you decide.

How much did it cost to replace the cats with Magnaflow?

Marcus, I am the unfortunate one with a CLK320. I brought my car in to MB for the B Service and they told me that the secondary on the drivers side was making some noise, but works. They want $1300 for a full driver side replacement. What nerves me is that I told them about the noise. I am at 84K and don't you think they could have done an Cat test at 78K when I had the car in for the A Service? I think they should cover me for the Warranty. Anyway...can I use the 599XX series Magnaflows on my 320?

Thanks
