Yes another 430 vs 320 and mpg question

The price of gas has gotten ridiculous and I need a good car with sensible mpg for both city and highway. I have plans to pick up an 02/03 Convertible CLK, I just need to decide on the model.

What is the difference in MPG on the 320 vs 430? I did a search and have conflicting results. On one forum, someone mentioned on the 430 you get about 200-300 miles per tank and on the 320 you will get 300-400 per tank. Which is a big difference. Prices of the used clk cabriolets 430 and 320 are similar so that should be an issue.

I test drove both and can live with a 320 if it will save a substantial amount in gas but wouldnt mind the 430 and the goodies that come with it...

Will probably put about 10k miles on this car a year.

Which would you go for ? Again the mpg are high on the priority list, I paid $4.90 a gallon here today in Socal for super.

Since I also live in OC, we probably have similar driving conditions (climate, traffic, speed, etc.). I would say 90% of my driving is freeway. I am really gentle on the pedal and very attentive to staying off the brake until braking is necessary (coasting to red lights, keeping a good following distance on the freeways, etc.)

My CLK430 does really well on gas. For as long as I've owned this car, I have never gotten less than 360 miles to a tank. I generally get between 375-390 miles to a full tank, and about twice I've gotten it just over 400 miles on one tank (a little game I've been playing for years now). Great gas mileage for a V8. Even my Lexus SC430 with the same size engine and a bigger gas tank doesn't even come close. I know my gas tank is over 16 gallons, but at the gas station with the gas light on, I rarely pump more than 16 gallons. Which means I'm averaging 23-25 mpg on my daily driving (mostly freeway).

I would definitely recommend you getting a 430 or a 55. These cars do really good on gas. Anyone that tells you they are getting between 200-300 to a tank must be flooring it between every intersection, or have something mechanically wrong with their car. BTW, I've always pumped 87 octane religiously. That's a different thread though, I think you might get better MPG's on higher octane fuel as well.

Okay, just noticed you have a Lambo and a Hummer, when did you start being so concerned about MPG's.

X2

I guess your looking for a good daily? Get yourself a MKIV golf or a lower model 3 seris

IMO i would buy an econo box if you are so concerned. For God sake you have a Lambo!

A month ago i took my E55 into the dealer for service. They ran out of C-classes so they gave me a late model Nissan Altima 2.5.... I loved it! It had low rpm torque, good brakes and great gas milage (30+) for a 4 door. Of course it had two climate control settings; hot and cold, no supportave seats, ugly styling, no passing power...... But it did not matter it was perfect people mover. I only work about 1.5 miles away so driving the E55 as a daily does not matter.

If you have long to go get a beater that will cost you very little and get good MPG. On the weekends and Friday's drive the Lambo

CLK430Benz, i think u have problem with your fuel injector. i suggest that u should go buy those fuel injection cleaner in Kragen or AutoZone to clean it out. I clean it regularly and put the octane booster in the fuel tank ( 106 octane boost, hehehe) , whenever i have a chance to go buy the bottle. Even in the city, i get about 17mpg , and i work in San Francisco.

I wonder what it is...that's a huge difference. Maybe besides your driving conditions and driving habits, its your mods? I'm usually disappointed when I get closer to 360 miles to a tank, rather than around 390. My 430 is completely stock though.

The photos are what I get in a 430 with no traffic. The upper photo is a run from So Cal to the bay area. The lower photo is a run from Santa Clarita to Hollywood.

With traffic is a different story. The bumper to bumper LA crawl (think 405 near LAX, or Westwood, or Irvine) will result in high teens. From Hollywood to Santa Clarita, starting at 5:00 PM with the AC on and averaging under 30 MPH (the #170 to #5 merge is a 5 MPH crawl) will return 23/24 MPH.

Two weeks ago I drove a 2008 C300, and the mileage was about 2 MPG higher than my car. I'm happy with the 430 mileage. Besides, the value of the dollar is zippo anyway.

19 to 20? Damn Hersh, is the Holland tunnel @ rush hour part of your daily commute? If so, your Manhattan parking makes gas look cheap.

Take the train to MSG

Thanks for the responses, the Lambo is a weeked car and the H2 is a daily beater. I didnt mind the gas prices until they surpassed the $4.50 per gallon mark with no signs of letting up which to me is just plain stupid to pay those prices. I do plan on keeping the H2 and drive it occasionally even though I am averaging 8 mpg on it now!

So the general consensus is the 430 (if running properly) should get around 370 miles per tank or around 22+ mpg and the 320 would get a few mpg more, so roughly another 50 miles per tank. I would be more than happy with 22 mpg for mixed driving.

2000 CLK 430
I just poured gas last night when i got back from OC, it was on E and i poured 15 gallons and was able to go 328 for that tank.

On the prevous fill, I was driving extremely conservative and doing 60mph on the freeway, and i was able to ave 24mpg.

Not sure if my 19" rims and my amg exhaust is messing things up, probably more of my 19's than anything. Wonder if i can get those kind of MPGs with stockers....temping to try it..

I got a '99 430 too. No cool display. Here's my usual technique.

It takes 15.5 gallons to fill up when my gas light is on for awhile (I know we have 16.4 gallon tanks, but I haven't tested that yet ), I fill up, then I reset my trip meter, when my trip meter hits around 360-370 miles, my gas light comes on and by the time I get to a gas station it is between 375-390. I am able to put in about 15.5 gallons again.

Then I just calculate it 390/15.5. And my average MPG is about 25 when I get 390 to a tank. Then for every 15 miles I don't get, I subtract 1 from 25. So when my trip meter is at 375 to the tank, I know I averaged 24 MPG, 360 = 23 MPG...and so on. I always get 24-25 MPG (375-390 miles per tank) unless I do a lot of city driving or get stuck in bad freeway traffic. Then I've seen it go as low as 360.

I also have stock rims. How about the diameter of your tires. Maybe you are getting more miles than your odometer reads. I don't know... Maybe with a larger diameter you are going faster and further than what your speedometer and odometer reads. Maybe something to do with the adaptations, where even if you are light on the pedal, the ECU has already trained your car to run rich. Who knows. good luck.

I get 360 miles per tank to average around 23mpg. I drive 113 miles per day and have 129000 miles on my car. It is a 2000 CLK 430. Most of my driving is highway and therefore, this average is a highway average. It's been consistently at 23mpg since at least April of this year.
