do you have the mercedes spring compressor? if not, the only other way that i saw to do it without that spring compressor is to drop the lower control arms, which really shouldnt take much time to do anyways.

i was just going to use a reg. spring compressor.. do i still need to drop the lower control arm?

so if i just compress the springs with the car on on jack stands will they just come out or do i have to do something else?

IF you are quite good at DIY then you can do this yourself but take extreme care as the coil compressors can be deadly.. The back is no problem and you dont need the spring compressor to remove the coils, as you can just drop the rear arm by placing your jack below and undoing the bolt that attaches to the body. (I had to change my coils and pads 5 times at the rear before I was happy with the drop and therefore got pretty quick at it ! see photos)
The front is harder and requires the compressor, you may also have to undo the damper bolt to get more height in order to remove the coil.

Good luck , do a search on the forum there are hundreds of posts, and one peice of advice MAKE SURE you get the wheel alignment changed after you have finished.

Any suggestions on the cheapest place to get springs. And for the newbie, can you explain to me what the D#1 pads are that people recommend as well?

The only place you get them from is the dealer and they are dirt cheap so buy lots in case your not happy with the height !

(PS there's a 1000 posts on this subject so just do a search!)

So you just add or take away pads till you get what height you want?

Cool

No.
There are different number pads ranging from 1 to 5 I believe. Theres is a post around here somewhere with the exact measurements. 1 is the thinnest (more drop) and 5 is the thickest. I have H&R's with #1 pads all the way around. I like it.

FYI many people here are using W210 spring pads because they have thinner pads available.

You gotta be kiddn me lol. Went to the MB dealership today because the springs came in this morning and they looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned D#1 pads. Are these numbers above for a 98 - 02 E class? They told me to get model numbers and come back

these spring pads are for the CLK and E class. The cars are similar in several parts and these are a few of them. Its just a big rubber stopper.

ie, those are the correct part numbers, whether the dealer believes you or not.

Install the springs without pads or with your existing pads trimmed down.
