Headunit install questions. Pioneer Avic z110bt

So I just bought this unit. Not at that price though

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ms/AVIC-Z110BT

I am contemplating doing the install myself. I currently have the stock nav unit but it's pretty week IMO. It's time for a face-lift.

To my understanding, all I need is a VW wire harness and a Euro to American antenna converter? Is there anything else? Is the antenna deal needed for all units?

I read something about using a pac 10 as well to allow the bose amp and the headunit to get along.

Is there anything Im missing or should know about before attempting the install?

Any replies help, thanks guys!

I love your rims. What did you pay for them and where did you get them? Also what size? I need new back tires on my black 2000 w208 convertible and am considering rims and like yours.

You’ll need the wiring harness adapter (Crutchfield part number 120701784), the antenna adapter (Crutchfield part number 12040VW12), a PAC OEM2 for the BOSE amps, and a PAC SWI-CAN2 and PAC SWI-PS for the steering wheel controls. The SWI-PS is Pioneer specific.

If you’re replacing a COMAND, it may just slip in. If you’re replacing a single DIN radio, there is a piece between the radio and the lower slot that will have to be removed. I’ve spoken to a couple of people who said removing that piece is easy.

Here’s a link to something that’s close to what you’ll be doing.

For the trim you'll need the install kit if does not come with it. As far as a i know recently AVIC series have not included it, mine did not.

The install is real easy, unlike most thing in things in the car. If your friendly with a little wires its an easy task.

Yeah I am replacing a command unit so I'll cross my fingers and hope it needs no adjustment.

For those who have gone through the process. Where did you mount/stash the gps antenna? Also where did you mount the mic for the bluetooth?

Behind the glove box theres a metal cross bar. The GPS is magnetic, I get a pretty good signal right there.
Mounting the mic is the tough one theres a interesting post on converting your ceiling mic and retrofit it with the pioneer one.

Stupid question, but will my sound be powered by both the bose amp and the Pioneer unit? Will it make it louder?

Speakers will be powered by the bose amp.
pac-2 has gain control so you can adjust the loudness to your liking. I have mine only half way and its plenty loud...much louder and clearer then the stock unit.

Without the pac2 your pioneer will amplify the sound and then again the bose amp. One reason why you get early distortion without it, double amplification.

i would mount the gps receiver along your trim on the right corner of the window (which is where i mounted mine) under the trim.

For those who have a stock navi system and plan to replace with an aftermarket unit Just wanted to let you know that it is not a direct fit. You will have to buy the mount kit.

Working on the install today and having some issues. Dumb question, My VW harness came with a blue (remote Im guessing) wire however it wasn't attached to the harness just in the package. Do I need to attach it? If so which slot? Thanks

Okay, things arent adding up for me here. On my VW harness the yellow battery wire doesn't match up with anything on the MB port number two which has power ground ect. Which colored wire should it go with? There are two other color wires on the MB clip, a green w red stripe and a yellow with black stripe, What are they?

I havent had any luck even getting the unit to turn on, need some help

This is what I did – before attaching the harness adapter to the PAC-OEM2, I plugged the adapter in by itself. Just the adapter in the factory wiring harness. Then I took a volt meter and checked the bare wires on the adapter. That allowed me to be certain of what was coming from the adapter. It’s been a long while, but I know I tapped the cigarette lighter for something. I think it was switched power. Also, my Crutchfield docs said the red and yellow wires (12V+ constant & switched) may be reversed in some cars.

It sounds like you have a different adapter. Mine didn’t come with a blue wire. On mine, the remote amp wire was pink. Orange/White was the dimmer.

Or better yet, here is what my adapter looks like:

Thanks Marcus. I guess my main question is what wire colors from the stock plug are matching up with what colors on the VW harness. Would it be too much of a pita to possible take a look or snap a pic. Sorry man I just cant seem to get my unit to even power on.

Ok using MarcusF diagram above make sure these wires line up with the VW harness as i may have moved some of the pins around to get it to work. This will get your power going.

Take the PAC unit out of the mix verify these 4 wires:

Merc -> VW Harness -> To Stereo

*Brown -> Black -> Ground
None -> Orange -> Do not use
*Red w/ Blue Stripe -> Red -> ACC (Switched power - yellow from HU)
*Blue w/ White Stripe -> Blue -> Remote (Signal to turn on Bose amp; tap in for other amps)

This is the wierd one:
*Cig Lighter + directly to +Battery wire on headunit

Unit should power up now

-----
For the PAC just use speaker wire to speaker wire on both ends ignore the remote wire,+ and - wires just speaker wires only (PAC unit doesn't need power, these other wires are for if you didn't have a remote signal).

-----
For the video to play or type an address on GPS when the car is moving theres a trick you can do. Its more then just grounding the parking brake. You take the mute wire and move it to the 4th pin. Mate that with the green parking brake wire then ground them both, woot!
Heres a video of it should work on the Z series too. Check www.avic411.com if it doesn't.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HL5pkAKkkA

Edit found a video for your Z110 its just the mute wire is moved in a different spot. (still watch the video above as well)

Thanks man I really appreciate it, do you by chance remember what color wire on the cigarette lighter you tapped into?

I think my yellow and red wires may be switched around.

I used a voltage meter tonight and found 12 volts. Should that wire lead to my yellow battery wire or my red acc wire?

Thanks again guys for your help!

Battery
If its reversed ACC and Battery, you'll notice your presets won't save. If so switch them.

If this all doesn't work give me a call will work it out.
That Z110bt is pretty sweet, especially for the prices they are going for now they were well over $1200 a year ago. How come you didn't go for the Z120bt? They are about the same price, strike a deal?
