Found cheap Mobil fully synthetic oil at ASDA is 5w 30 OK?
Hey guys,
Firstly for those not in the UK I appologise as this relates to a UK Supermarket.
I was in ASDA and they are selling 5w 30 Mobil Fully Synthetic 5l oil for £10 !!! I normally pay about £40 at Halfords for the same !?
My question is, I have been using 0w 40 Fully synthetic Mobil up until now, so do you guys think that using 5W 30 will be ok, as its such a good price ?
Cheers

You'll hear no from most of the forum members. 5w40 is now approved for our cars. Not sure how much difference the 30 really makes

I don't think that oil would be good in the summer, but as winter is coming if you need a service get it.
5w = 5 below 0
30 = 30 above.
I think that's how oil value is interpreted. Unfortunately Asda isn't local to any of my travels otherwise I would jump on that as I'm due a service in a months time.
Good find!

There is only one thing I care about when it comes to oil – that it keeps very expensive parts from grinding themselves into a very expensive bill.
Viscosity, as it's measured in motor oil, is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow, or it's "thickness". That "thickness" is quantified in centiStokes (cSt), which was named after Stokes Law for Friction. Motor oil thickness is temperature dependant. The normal operating temperature for motor oil is 100°C. So, that brings us to the logical question - what's the optimum thickness for motor oil at it's normal operating temperature? The answer is in the bearing clearance. Mobil1 0W40, the recommended oil, is 14 cSt at 100°C. According to the Mobil1 U.S. spec sheet, Mobil1 5W30 is 11 cSt at 100°C. Is that too thin?
In the words of Tony Montana, "Youse gotz me mang." If you've never seen scarface, nevermind.
Much of what I know about oil is here. Short enough NOT to give you a headache.

I have to agree with marcus on this. Its not just the operating temperatures you need to worry about but how well the oil flows at certain temperatures. Just learned about this this week in class

I stand corrected on this A1EK.
I asked a mechanic about which oil to use and he said the 5W-30 would be fine. But he also said at hotter temparatues in the engine the 0W-40 offered more protection and if it were his car that is what he would use!
