W208 320
w208 front wheels/suspension clunk

Hi, if anyone cna help, i'd be grateful...

I have a 2000 W208 clk320 no mods. Recently, when turning into my driveway, as i go over the drop kerb, the front wheels make a clunk sound and the clunk transfers up the steering wheel. It only seems to be bad on full lock and sometimes i can also feel it if i hit a pothole whilst driving..

I do drive over a lot of speed bumps (14 to work, 14 back from work, in 2 miles) so i'm wondering if it might be the bushes or something to do with hte suspension because it is getting a lot of grief?

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Check your shocks and shock bolts. I've had the same problem twice, once in the front and once in the back. The front turned out to be a loose shock bolt and the rear was a bad shock bushing. Hope this helps.

In addition to what Ghost said, the steering gear bolts are supposed to be tightened every 50K miles. It takes about three minutes.

99CLK320,
mine does it a little bit on a right hand turn into my driveway, but I only have 30K on the car. the tighter the turn the more noticeable the clunk. Marcus, are you referring to the bolts on the inside of the drivers side fender well and if so do you happen to have the torque setting for them? TIA, dlb

Steering Gear Bolts

Just checked the steering gear bolts on my daughters 320 about a month ago.Per Marcus the bolts should be torqued to 70Nm/51foot pounds.

Yes, those are the ones. They are very simple to do. Here's a link.

Thank you for the information. I did this on my 55 208 and now the steering feels much tighter.

question. Did tightening those bolts fix your issue? It did not fix the issue with mine. (same issue you reported).
