Ugly 1999 CLK Steering Wheel
I think this is the ugliest steering wheel MB ever prduced.
I have a 99 CLK430, what are the cheapest replacement steering wheel(no wood) that I can do it myself ? Where can I get it ?(eBay)
I want to keep the existing air bag so the dealer will not void the warranty (and save money). Thanks

If you want to keep THAT airbag, you are stuck to that style wheel...I don't even think that that wheel was ever offered in wood/leather...it was offered in "carbonfiber" (print)/leather...

Steve, You are right!
BTW, I hope you will enjoy the NY trip.
I spoke with 3 NYC dealers and they all told me the same thing. If I change the airbag by myself (not going to authorized service dept.), the warranty of electrical/safety will be voided, and they will record the change in the central database so all the dealers will see it. All the dealers want $1000 for the new steering wheel and airbag.
I know this is bulls**t, but I do not want to mess with the warranty. My car still has 3 yrs starmark ¡§component¡¨ warranty and I know I will use it. Mercedes fixed 2 problems (fuel flow sensor and rattling noise under the hood) under warranty in last month.
I installed the aftermarket HID by myself and my dealer adjusted the aiming for free, they told me that they don't care about the aftermarket HID because it is a minor change. But replacing the airbag by third party is a big deal for MBUSA since it is safety related and may cause legal issue in case of accident.

can't agree that it is the ugliest every made... but the W209 steering wheel is quite ugly... a big step down from the MY00+ W208s.
Only thing i do like is the Tiptronic controls on the back of the wheel....

I, too, would like to improve the steering wheel in my 99 CLK.
Here's what I did in my CLK500 and my porsches...

That wheel is just like mine, except with different spokes. Using my picture as a better example how can you not like it? It is ergonomic, thicker, has grips built in, perferorated leather, and has leather behind the wood inserts so your hands do not slip while you turn.
