steering wheel controls work with non-factory stereo?
Dan
How different is your setup from mine? I'm still using my OEM radio though.
How are you still using your OEM radio? I had to remove mine so that I could install the Nav and 7300DVD unit.
Any info would be helpful
thanks
dan
Here are my specs:
AVX-7300
AVIC-9DVD
OEM Radio
Those require three dins...BUT I have my 7300 on where the factory HU used to be. I moved the factory HU down to the extra din. The DVD/Nav unit is custom-mounted inside my glove box - provides extra protection, I can lock it up together with the remote and detachable piece of the 7300's face.
I have a pic of my dash in: http://home.earthlink.net/~lifeisshort/IntAcc
I will upload the pic of my AVIC9 in the glove box to give you an idea.

My OEM stereo and connections were not touched. The AVIC9 connects directly to the AVX7300. This is bad in the sense that they'd have to re-do all the connections if I want the master unit when I the head unit. It's good in the sense that my OEM stuff were not touched and everything on the OEM side still functions.
Newbie:
The wood trims are really nice. They match the factory wood dye, color, and wood pattern. The wooden armrest is really like an OEM armrest replaced with wood. It's not an armrest cover, it's a replacement. The same goes with the door pull handles, they replace the plastic door pulls. They are Schaetz products but you can order them from www.myroadster.net. Just send him an e-mail and mention my name. Or I think Performance Products also sells them but they sell them for too much $$$$$.
My set (door pulls and armrest) cost about $450 (if memory serves right...don't remember, really).
In my post, all I said was that Guile would loose access to the display. I didn't say he would loose access to the steering wheel controls.
I have the same setup as Arnee, except my AVIC-9DVD unit is in the trunk.
Can you please let me know where your dealer got that adaptor from? When I had mine installed (by the infamous Fletcher Jones), they said the adaptor wasn't available but that they heard that someone was working on one.
Can you access any of the navigation functions through your steering wheel controls? Or just the radio functions of your Pioneer setup?
I'd have to ask my installer if he knows of such adapter or wait for Dan's input. I want to replace my head unit, changer, speakers, and amp but I still want steering control.
I wasn't trying to offend you and I hope I can help my fellow Benz owners. I'm waiting for a call back from my guy at the stereo shop and I will post the info asap.
thanks guys and I'll post the info.
By the way, has anyone thought about the intake work by Technik in Beverly Hills? Please check out the posts and let me know what you think, I'm interested in doing it.

I believe that Arnee has the same setup as I do. The sound for the Pioneer Navigation comes out of a separate speaker.
In my car, that speaker is mounted behind the rear view mirror and is in no way connected to the car's speaker/head unit.
It's kinda lame because the audio of the radio/CD doesn't get muted when the navigation plays, but I learned from Frank over at MBNZ.org that I can wire the mute wire from the navigation to the mute wire of the phone cable, and it will mute the radio properly. I haven't actually yet tried connecting it this way...but will within the next month or so.
My monitor nor navigation does not connect to the OEM head unit. It's a totally independent unit from the OEM radio. Shah is right when he said that the navigation comes with a small speaker as all nav units do (Alpine, etc.) for the nav audio.
However, Shah, my installer knew about the mute thing and my navigation mutes my OEM radio whenever it gives me a command. The AVIC9 has some setup options that allows you to have it mute the radio or not. I just have it mute the radio when it gives a command. The AVIC9 has a wire to connect to the radio's mute wire so it's compatible with the OEM's wire.
That and the power wire are the only ones that I know of connect the AVIC9 to the OEM radio.
As far as the DVD player option, I have it ghetto style (for now) where the AVIC9's audio out goes through an FM modulator to my OEM's antenna. I have an adjustable gain FM modulator with a switch to turn the audio on/off.
My installer also did once nice thing for me: He set the parking brake signal so the AVIC always thinks that I have the brake on, allowing me to watch DVDs while driving - which is all what we want anyway, right?
I hope that all makes sense. The AVIC9 direct connects to the AVX7300 monitor and does not need any other brain, that's why it doesn't need to connect to the OEM radio except for the optional DVD audio. This setup only makes use of the Pioneer stuff as a navigation system and DVD player but not as a headunit, of course.
The AVIC is voice activated also so the mic is wired above the rear view mirror on the headliner. It's a bit stealth also but once I point it out, it will be noticeable that it's not part of the car. Initially we tried putting the mic together with the SOS/phone mic inside the headliner but it wouldn't fit, the mic is too big.
My FM modulator switch is mounted underneath on the passenger footwell cover and there's a small push-pull switch that turns the modulator on/off.
I think I mentioned before that my AVIC9 is in my glove box so I can watch DVDs through it if I wanted. It's really easier to see if I have pics ---- which I will take and upload to my webspace.
