When should I do an alignment on my CLK?

I'm wondering when it's necessary to do an alignment on my CLK 320. I'm aware of obvious times, like when the car pulls hard to the left or right, but what about when modifications are made to the car?

1) Is an alignment necessary when I upgrade my 16" wheels to 18" wheels?

2) When I get suspension lowering springs like Eibach or H&R springs, will I need to get an alignment (I think the answer to this is yes, but can someone please confirm)?

3) I've been told that when cars are raised off the ground (like for an oil change, etc.) that alignment can be effected. Is this true? How about when I rotate tires?

Or is this all mute because there is some fancy mechanism in the car that will tell me when my alignment is off?

Thanks in advance...

Unless you notice your alignment being off, the only times you will need to change it is if you change your suspension or hit something (including curbs).

you might have to wait like a week after you get springs installed so they have a chance to sit in a little. and of course if you notice uneven tire wear.

Yes, if you have the option, wait about 200 miles before getting your alignment done after lowering your car.

another indicator is to make that your tires are wearing evenly, assuming that your shocks are in good shape.

I thought you were supposed to get an alignment every time you changed all 4 tires?

Another alignment question:
When I lower the car with lowering springs, I'll have negative camber in the rear wheels that I won't be able to fix unless I:

1) Have the upper control arm heated and bent (the old fashion way of doing alignments).

2) Purchase adjustable camber adjustment bolts. $$$

What is everyone's recommendation?

Many do, but you don't have to. Just make sure you get tires balanced.

You will have very minor negative camber, and still be able to have your car alligned. Minor negative camber is a good thing, and helps handling. If you're worried that your car will be lower than mine, I have a 430 with H&R springs and 2/1 pads. I had no problems getting my car alligned.
