knocking on start up after filter change
I read the diy on oil changes and have done hurndreds on all kinds of cars aka expert... I did my merc last month nas I know th e line deal on the fliter but in the DIY it say the lins should be right on the edge of the filter but mine was 1/4 over I guess from what I read it happens as long as it flush to the botton of the canester its ok. Well when I start the car I get a knock AKA no oil for about 2 sec in the morning or at night . If I run the car stop for 5 min restart no knock so i am thinking aboutt he damage I must be causing. Has anyone has been or heard of this.

Knocking no.. valve tap very common. If you truely have a knock it wont go away when it warms up... in fact it will get worse. You sure it's not the valves tapping? If the filter is not seating it will just let the oil bypass, not cause a knock. You put the correct weight oil in right?

Not sure what your "knock" is, but rod knocks only go away when the rod doin the knockin says hello! Oil pressure is highest when cold and with main bearing clearance around .003 and rods around .025, any noise you hear cold will only get worse as the oil thins with heat. Posting a sound clip may be helpful.

Ok it maybe it's not a piston slap know but it happens in a secsecition or 7-8 so knock... if it rests for 2 hours and still warm it does it again... I seen some post stating it is normal but don't buy it..What is worse is I feel it was nt there proior to the oil change.

99CLK320,
How many quarts did you put back in? How many miles on your car? If your oil level is a bit low you could hear some engine noise before the oil has circulated. I think you may be over reacting but if you are really concerned take it to a mechanic and let it set overnight and let them start it in the morning. that way you can get a second opinion and it should not cost you anything unless they really do find a problem and you chose to go with their recommendation to have the problem repaired.

The probelm is I am a machainc on the side been wrking on cars for over 18 years. I am trying to see if this a clk thing... I saw other forums for the 300 that this happens allot and is normal.. The diy with the line on the fliter has me wonder but as I said before it seated fine in the canister or filter housing. The only machanic that would give me the best opinion would be a merc and we know what that would cost...

Sounds like it could be the purge valve. The purge valve is on the drivers side in front of the ABS box. The valve is black and has the letters MOT on top of it. You may wish to touch the valve when the car is making the knocking noise. If the valve vibrates at the same instance as the knock, thats it. If you unplug the valve as a test to see if the noise stops, you may (will) trigger a CEL that may require a code reader to reset.

I will it was that simple
I not a ticking noeis I listens to the purge vavle. It's all day long no oil getting somewhere for about 2 seconds a knock not tick. Thinks of the sounds being the same after an oil filter change. You start the car and there is a knock till oil gets to the filter then it stops. For me it is each time I start the car after sitting for 20 min. This will not being good if I keep doing it. Mythought is that maybe the oil is draining out of the filter housing and need to be refilled ans that it should not be draining. I looked I the DIY and the filter can go on eihter way. The important part is making sure it was seated all they way down.

Its a normal thing, dont worry. it takes a second for the oil pressure to fill up the filter housing causing a low oil pressure knock until pressure is built up,normally takes 6-7 seconds depending on millage. rather common on w203, w208 , w209 with the 112 engine. ensure you are using the correct oil as well.
ps: i'm a benz tech.. shhhh!

believe it or not my neighbor has an 99 clk that doesnt make any of the usual/normal noises on start up. He claims it stopped after switching to 5-40 castrol edge (syntec) oil and a bottle of prolong additive.
I switched to castrol also but havent used the prolong...
