just wanted to ask if you know why those gt cars always drive with the windshield wiper in the middle position....what possible advantage could that give the drivers...

It may be regulation in the DTM that they cannot remove it. Or I think they may also race in the rain, I am not sure. What I do know is that in the upright position it causes less wind resistance. I read that a while ago as the DTM was getting started. The other cars in the DTM do the same thing. I have seen pictures of the opal astra with a singular wiper that is stuck in the vertical position. The article said they do it to reduce wind resistance.

Basically, anything on the exterior car will cause wind resistance, in some cases good (spoilers) and in others bad (excess drag). I have not seen a wind-tunnel diagram for the CLK, so I can not tell you how much wind hits the windshield wiper in any position. But, with the car traveling straight, which would cause air to hit the front of the car and move up as it can not go through the car, one would want the front to be as aerodynamically correct as possible. When the windshield wiper is in a horizontal position, it spans about 2 ft horizontally. This is 2 ft of drag (how much, I do not know) that can be reduce to inches when the windshield wiper is vertical (in the middle). With the wiper straight up-and-down, the wind traveling against the car is only exposed to a surface apprx 1" wide (didn't measure, just guessing). It is much easier for air, or any substance, to go around an object 1" wide than 2 ft.

The wiper does not need to span the entire window on a racer, only the drivers direct view. A more complicated, and heavier mechanism is required for a reciprocating wiper. The straight up, and down wiper only has to stroke left to right 45 deg in each direction, no reciprocation necessary.

Answer this logically pls:
If u stick your hand out of the car when travelling at high speed, which position will cause resisitance? Horizontal or vertical? Remember that the winshield is also slanted to ease air flow. Trust me guys, there's a difference and you'll feel it if it were your hand. Secondly, at those speeds and cornering characteristics... those wipers would snap and fly off easily!!
Would you rather have the end of the wiper support facing the direction of the air or perpindicular to it?
