I have the Equus 3100. Works great but no scanner will clear the warning if the problem still exists. Even if you do clear the warning light, after you restart the car it will come back.

I got an Actron OBDII reader and it kicks serious ***! Just changed out my air mass sensor and cleared the error using the Actron tool. Whole project took me 20 minutes. I got my reader off of ebay for $90 brand new.

what's the difference between this and the mb star diagnostic or whatever the thing they have at the dealer? my mechanic said that he bought the computer system the first year they had it for like $18,000...and then the next year there was an update so he had to pay another $1700 for it...but then the next year they upgraded again so he told them to shove it

The MB star diagnostic does a much deeper scan. You can do a ton more stuff to the computer in the car. The OBDII tool, gives you general diagnostic stuff and the ability for you to reset your Check Eng light and other faults.
Here is the Actron I got and has worked like a champ.
http://ebay.com and type in the following number in the search 2488276624 box.

Where do you stick the scanner? Does it come with the round socket in the engine compartment? Or do you have to buy it separately?

Answers:
1. The socket or plug is located under the steering wheel just by the steering column. You will find a small black door about 2 inches wide with a lip on it. Open it and the waa-laa, there is where you plug the OBDII box into.
2. The scanner will pick all or any fault codes. The Actron box can actually run some minor tests on your sensors (like the Mass Air Flow sensor) and tell you it is working or not. More then likely you will get a check engine light before when one of your sensors craps out. You can also reset the error(s) and that will turn off your check engine light. If the problem is still there the light will come back on.
Oh ya, you can go to any of the OBDII sites like Actrons site and look up the code. The Actron actually gives you a crude description of the error but definitely look it up or simply call a parts store and tell them to look it up for you.

I am looking to spend upto £500 or $800 on a Mercedes Diagnostics, that cover more than just the engine? Is there anything out there within this budget?
