Being the original owner of a 2005 CLK500 coupe you might think this is biased. At the time I was looking to purchase I considered a convertible.
The reasons I went with the coupe are:
1) Cost... convert was $6k more.
2) Coupes are significantly lighter hence faster and better handling.
3) I live in the NE so there's really only 4 months you can really enjoy a vertible.
4) With coupe and sunroof option you do get a convertible feeling albeit not a true convertible.
5) Even with all the work MB does in insulating the top a coupe is quieter at highway speeds with the top up.
On the other hand convertibles do give you:
1) Wind in your hair feeling.. (Gotta love it on a nice 75 - 80 deg day.)
2) Cool factor of owning and driving a convertible
3) Higher resale value
4) Can be very expensive to repair or replace top
In the end it's really personal preference. However if I were to buy another one I would probably buy a convertible as this isn't a daily driver for me and is typically only taken out on weekends.
All CLK 500's have AMG package as standard in 2005

Depends...
Vert = Chicks car
Coupe =
Chick magnet
Kidding... they are both sweet! neither are race cars, so the speed difference doesn't much matter. Get what you like

I'm looking at buying the convertible this Friday and I also live in the NE. I hope I get more than four months of top down action! Anyway, being as it is, this is my first convertible and I'm wondering if there is anything anyone can tell me about the top itself. Will the black fabric fade after 2 years? Is there any special spray or anything I should be spraying on it? I've already got the obvious.. don't park under pine trees that drop sap, don't leave the top down in a rain storm.. etc. What are some of the not-so-obvious things one might not know?
Thanks

MB provides a top of the line fabric top (as one would expect) that will hold up just fine, for many years. The black top will not fade. The top on my 2006 looks as good as new.
If you get and use the windscreen, you can drive COMFORTABLY at anything over 50F with the top down, windows up and heat set to normal. Just south of Boston, I have the top down on most any sunny day from April through November! And there hasn't been a winter month yet, where a day or two hasn't been warm enough to drop the top!

Not saying I wouldn't want a cab. but if you put the front and rear windows down with the sunroof, it feels just like the cab.
Does anyone else notice that the lack of a B pillar with both front and rear windows down gets a lot of double takes and attention?

Problem is riding around here is riding around during the code months with the top down and windows all up get you the wrong kind of double take
Heres a newbe question I probably should have searched in another thread somewhere.. Where is the windscreen? I know it's not electrical in the 07's but is there some special place it's hidden? I didn't see it when I test drove the car and opened the trunk and the salesman said he thinks its with the car. Knowing MB there's some hidden hatch for it. Does the headrest open up and a whole windscreen come out or something? lol

No, it's a separate unit that comes in it's own zip-up case! You un-fold it and lock it into the two mounting holes below the rear windows and under the rear headrests. Once it's in place, you can fold the vertical section up or down, so it can stay in place with the top up. In all honesty it doesn't make a big difference with the windows down, but when it's chilly and the windows are up, it helps keep the car very comfortable! Seems a bit cheaply made though.......
My last car was a Saab 9.3 convertible and the wind screen made a huge difference regardless if the windows were up or down.
I have owned nothing but convertibles throughout my 51 years, so I learned long ago to ignore anyone staring when I have toe top down in 40 - 50 degree weather!!!! ;-)

CLS400 4Matic 2016 / ML 350 2009 / clk 320 w209 sold/ sl 500 1996 sold/ cls550 2008 sold
Moreover, I was also lost between both cars, but i finally decided to go for the coupe because I think its nicer than the vert. IMO the back of the vert is not as nice as the coupe...the roof looks to small and tight...
good luck

See I think the opposite.
CLK 320 = chick, regardless coupe or cab. ( I know 2 girls that have them, maybe thats why)
But CLK 500.
Cab is slighty more chickish to me than the coupe. Although I dont really think either one is a girl car.
