My Silverstar Ultra review

I have been debating for a couple weeks now on whether or not I wanted to:
A) buy OEM Xenon setup
B) buy an aftermarket kit
C) find a good bulb to replace the factory Halogens.

Well I went with the last option and chose the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra. I would love to find a set of OEM Xenon headlamps but don't know much about the system and how much of a plug and play set up it really is. Plus, they are quite pricey. I also chose against the HID kit because I don't really want to "rig" anything and don't want wires and ballasts and relays cluttering the engine bay. If I'm gonna do something, it's gonna be done right or not be done at all.

So, anyways I've had the regular Silverstars back in the day before they came out with the Ultra series and was fairly pleased. I can say I'm very pleased with the way these turned out and will eventually change the rest over. (these are very expensive for a Halogen at $27 each) They have a very pure white look with no blue and IMO give the front a very clean look. I can also tell a significant difference in the amount of light out ahead of me on the road. I can post some pics up later if anyone is interested.

Interesting. I have been through a lot of halogen bulbs trying to get that pure white or titanium white light output but with no luck.
The ones i found burned my retainer repeatedly.

Pics asap of this will be great to know

Do you think the ones he's talking will do the same? I'm assuming that headlight bulbs don't throw codes like other bulbs on the car. Would that be correct?

I would buy a set this weekend if that's the case. No codes or burnt retainers.

Traume, What's the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulb numbers you bought?

See I've never had a problem with halogen bulbs and burning any of my retainers as long as you get the right watt output...

The ones I've gotten are from hid-lights.com...

Used it on many different cars with no problems...try Sylvania too though...I've heard great reviews from them...I've just wanted a light blue tint always...

All I'm waiting for now is to get my xenon projectors...

These aren't like the "HID" halogen bulbs you see on ebay and such. They are tinted weird. It's a grayish blue colored glass with another tinted ring towards the end of the bulb. The filiment and glass is what is the difference from normal halogen. They physically look identical to the OEM bulb's except for the above mentioned items.

Here are some pics of the bulbs I found on the net. The last one doesn't really protray the two tone glass like I mentioned. It is more noticable in person.

Exactly! A lot of guys buy the higher wattage bublb and as a result end up with burned up wires and retainers. If you are going to do that, you need to upgrade the harness, I did this on my track car back home.

I seriously need to change out my high beam and fog bulbs, they look **** yellow at night.

I'd like to try these new ultras but they will probably still look yellow compared to my HIDs, so, I'll have to get tinted regular wattage bulbs. There is a ricer store here that sells bulbs but I think they might be all the high wattage ones, I tend to avoid going into the store, I don't want to catch rice...

Haha!...we all have a little rice in us whether we like it or not...hence the interior illumination in my civic...

(It was my first mod car)...

Kev you could get the projector fogs and get a HID kit for that then, but shipping is crazy for you right?...

They carry them at the local auto store by me. How long have you had them in?

It blows my mind how some of these brand name halogen bulbs cost more than an aftermarket HID kid.

Yeah, I could do that but I really don't want to, a whiter bulb will/should do me just fine. As for shipping, oh yes, it's not cheap and not reliable. We all know the fotune it cost me to have Wes ship me the Black Series bars, now I am still trying to get my camber kit released that has been in Dubai since February 5th (no notice that it had even arrived, I spend weeks searching for it).

Make sure you get the ultras, not the regular silverstars. They are more, but worth it. I just put them in yesterday afterwork. Tried them out last night and loved the outcome.

I'll get my buddy to set the cars side by side to compare. He has a G35 sedan that has factory HID's and they are reflectors not projectors. Should be a good comparison.

Anyone tried the Phillips Crystal Vision Ultra bulbs? They seem to have good reviews and are a little less expensive. But are not as readily available at the local auto parts store.
