Question VALE COVERS GASKET AND REAR MAIN SEAL

My 2005 CLK320 conv. had a routine maintenance done today, and they quote me $3,172.85 for repair, in addition to some routine service charges.

here is the list:
kuhno asx st. 460
vale cover gasket 560
brake fluid 120
air filter 70
pollen filter 49.50
spark plugs 470
rea main seal 944.85
rear main plate c10d 32.5
fuel filter 186
A service 280

TOTAL 3182.85

The car was doing fine except for the service light was on for service. Do I have to do everything they said? The car has 37k miles, and everything seemed fine before going to the shop for service. Now I am wondering if I need to pay for all of these.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear the troubles. Dealerships are in business to make money. Mercedes... tons of money for service especially.

Find a good Indie in your area that works on Euro cars. Could be half the $. May not even some of that stuff.

Dealerships have yet to adhere to the.... "Just say no to drugs" slogan. Good luck and post back.

I just replaced my valve cover gasket through the Indie ( my buddy own it plus i still have the warranty). You can check it by pull out your airbox and look at it if its bad you will see the leaks. For the rear main seal , you will have to lift the car up and check. I didnt replace it because there was no leak but i did replace my motor and transmission mounts.

I googled that, and it was two rear tires.

The rear main seal on many car usually don't leak until at least 150k-200k miles. I never have to replaced rear main seal on all my cars owned in the past excepted for mine 2006 Clk500 @ around 25K miles. As for the valves cover, the driver side on my Clk500 replaced @ around 15K miles.

this sounds to me like some sort of design flaw. otherwise, why do they need to be replaced at 15k or 25k miles?

The main seal could be due to bad part or installation error. As for the valve cover, maybe the torques were un-even.
