who makes Mercedes oil?

 

Are all those oils in the second post (cant read any of the first post....too small!) recommended for all the W209 engines? Cant believe the big/powerful engines require the same grades as my little 1.8! This is the first car I've owned that does not stipulate a grade in the owners handbook!


EDIT. I've just noticed that some of the oils listed are Turbo diesel oils....so clearly not for any engine! Which oils in the list suit which motors.

 

The handbook tells you the spec the oil needs to meet, and you can decide what viscosity you need using the chart in the handbook for your operating temperatures. The diesels sometimes need different oil that is low in ash, due to the DPFs fitted to the latter diesels. However that oil is once again a different MB spec.

 

But there's no harm using a low ash oil of a higher MB spec in a non DPF diesel. I assume the same oil is safe for the petrols also.

 

Spec oils are pretty pointless, especially ones that push the cost beyond $55 for 10q WalMart pricing. Most Euro 5w-40 come from the exact same formula from the additive suppliers like Lubrizol as a pre-approved package. Official spec approvals just add to the cost and the price. ANY 5w-40 or 0w-40 will work fine, especially HD oils like Rotella, I assume everyone knows that. Euro specs just lock an oil into a set formulation, they don't take advantage of newer tech. Many oil brands say "recommended for" this or that mfg spec, which is accurate, just skipping the $1M "approval" licence from the mfg.

That being said, Mobil 1 0w-40 is amazing at a discount price, but there are newer and better options out there for the same or LESS. I can't go into every possible scenario, but...



Keep an open mind. We have a completely different market for lube products in the USA, and can benefit from more frequent changes, due to our poor fuel quality and rich EPA tune for low NOx

Standout product in the USA is Mobil 1 HIGH MILES, with it's thick 30 grades and extreme additive levels, that are AGAINST EU Regulations to sell in Europe, lol.

Am am a sucker for good Euro lubes, but not low-additive ones. Someone gave me a brick of Lubro Moly 0w-40 to use and test the results of a UOA. A nice product on paper, but I am not expecting any benefits.

...who really wants to go 10k? What's the point of worrying about spec oil just to go excessive miles?

Two changes of regular oil at 5k or 6 months will produce a better result than one 10k change of 0w-40 in terms of engine deposits and overall lube performance, like the fresh friction modifiers every 5k verses the extended drains.

In the rest of the world, it's 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40 depending on how cold it is. Hell, 15w-40 HD is great above freezing if you don't do many short trips.

For cold starts, under 5000cSt is an ideal lower limit, just look at your anticipated temp and then determine the visc grade you can use. 10,000cSt should be the extreme limit, rarely encountered. 0w-40 for every application is simply absurd, especially the way Mobil 1 burns off. 15w-40 HD can match it for extended changes and wear protection.

It's possible to go thinner from the 15cSt of most 40 weight, down to a borderline 30 weight of 12cSt, like Rotella 10w-30 HD, it's not a big deal.
when Mobil 1 0w-40 starts at a thin 12.9cSt and shears rapidly. Oil goes through a huge range of visc from cold to hot, a 1000x difference.
The visc at operating temp can be from 10-15cSt, not a big deal. A chug-a-lug V8 or V6 can run on any oil off the shelf at the store, even a 20 weight. In some cold climates it's a necessity.

Frankly, my point is to pimp 10w-40, for a number of reasons. Lack of good 5w-40 choices, when Rotella is only $22 a gallon. Castrol 5w-40 is ancient crap. 10w-40 is dirt cheap, works perfectly with extra additives and mostly it comes in Hi-Miles versions that is unavailable in the rest of the world especially at $3 a quart. Check out Pennzoil HM, MaxLife and Mobil Clean HiMiles. We don't have a turbo, no need for synth!!! The quality of the 10w-40 we get now is FAR AWAY better than 10 or 20 years ago, basically exceeding "synth" "spec" oil of a few years ago, circa 2000 when these specs came into being.

May as well take advantage of what we have in the USA, cheap jugs of oil! Hell, sleeper Pennzoil's sleeper brand Quaker State 10w-40 is $13 a jug on Amazon, MaxLife is $17 and Mobil Clean HM is $15. Nobody really cares about saving a few dollars if they only maintain one car, but I maintain a bunch. If I ordered Euro oil for $50 a jug every time I would feel stupid.

I guarantee these oils run smoother than Mobil 1 0w-40, especially MaxLife with it's sodium additives and the ultimate smooth: 15w-40 Mobil 1300S HD

Pennzoil High-Miles 10w-40 for 6 months interval

 

All you need is the generic ACEA A3 spec, Euro mfg spces are BASED on IT.

In Europe, a 10w-40 blend like Durablend is an A3 oil. Mfg specs add a cold-cranking and MPG stipulation, disqualifying 10w-40 for MB or VW spec!

The main thing to remember is the EPA mpg test, the mfg wants the maximum mpg and by law MUST RECOMMEND the same oil as was used in the EPA test....0w-40!!!
