These prices are from TireRack for comparative purposes. I'm most interested in ride (i.e. comfort on our crappy New England roads) and tread life (the car has 17,000 miles on it and the Pirelli's, which I assume were OEM, are just about at the wear bars. I've been happy with Conti ExtremeContacts on my last 2 cars, but this 550 is a new beast to me!

Hey Eddie take a look at Discount Tire Direct just bought a set of tires there free shipping and great prices. I happen to go with a set of Nittos so far so good but you cant got wrong with the Michelin Pilot Sport.

I've been on the Conti DWS's for over a year. They look as though they are brand new still and I've got at least 15K miles on them. I think they are a 45-50K mile tire. Great in any condtions. Wet, dry, snow, ice. Doesn't matter, it'll take it all.
I would get them at Discount Tire Direct. They'll be the cheapest, and if anything ever happens to them, they'll replace without question. I've had to do that twice because of the crappy potholes here in Kansas.

Thanks all, but forum sponsor Tirerack seems to be cheaper than Discount Tire Direct.
$160F/$255R at Discount; $149F/$213R at Tirerack (Tirerack is about $50 for shipping)
Michelin Pilot Sport do seem very popular. $205/$243 at Discount;$193/$233 at Tirerack.

Pilot Super Sport year 'round down here, give great traction dry or wet. But not for below 30f or snow (whatever THAT is). Har! Sorry, not much help from me. But, boy, do I love them! Don't yet have a handle on wear...too new.

The Michelin PS range are great on these cars/this chassis. Best all round IMHO. Just note that they are not a long life tyre. You can't have it both ways. Don't fit directional tyres & rotate corner to corner if non staggered or across the same axle if staggered to change rolling direction. This will keep them quiet for life. Make sure your castor bushes are in good order to prevent feathering & cupping of new tyres. Have a proper 4 wheel alignment done. If car pulls with the camber of the road dial in 1 degree (2 max) more castor on the passenger side of the car. 3 way fluted castor bush bolts required for this operation.

You might want to look at the thread on the W209 forum on Benz World about Michelin PS tires. The thread is is on the firtspage because it has been posted in recently.

US dealers don't read the dealer bulletins. This chassis has always had a tendancy to pull with the camber of the road with any tyre. W203, 204, 209 etc. It is eliminated by a change in passenger side (US RHS) CASTER as I mention above. Opposite applies with RHD cars.
