I went to look for Mobile One 0w40 this week for an oil change. Considering this oil is recommended by MB for our engines, it's surprising that it is a challenge to find this in Canada. My local Candadian Tire does carry this oil but they actually sell it $2CAN more per liter than the dealership.

I talked to my friend who drives a M3 and he uses Castrol Formula RS 10W-60. He recommended Amsoil European Car Formula 5W-40 Synthetic for my car (2004 CLK320). According to the Amsoil link below, this 5w40 oil is 229.5 approved. I can buy this oil locally cheaper than Moboile One 0w40. Does any member here have experience on this oil?

I've used Amsoil, in my previously owned Infiniti G35. I think it is excellent oil and I have 12 quarts still on the shelf. I use it in my nissan truck when I change the oil myself.

I have not used it in the 550.

I think there is a list of approved oils in the wiki section of this forum.

Please search. I have written much previously on this subject. AMSOIL hold no Benz approvals for 229.5. Do not use it.

I just checked the list in one of the stickies and it does not even one Amsoil oil there. Since that list is more than 3 years old, I checked another list (link below) and sure enough, this Amsoil European Car Formula 5W-40 Synthetic is 229.51 approved.

Yes that's an old approval they hold for Diesels with Cat & Particulate filter Ash<0.8%. An easy test to pass.

The question you should be asking is why they don't hold a Latest 229.5 Gasoline engine approval.

This always becomes an emotive subject, See this thread. What I can never understand is why people want to use some crap in their Benz from a small "mouse milk" vendor when Benz gives you a great choice of products meeting 229.5. Please read both threads I have posted & others on the W204 forum. I'm not going to repeat myself again. It's a waste of time.

Well, as a user of Amsoil (NOT IN MY MB) I agree with Glyn. If you can't get Mobil1 readily, use something that is available from the list of approved oils. It just doesn't seem worth it to be a "test mule".

The trouble is that the deleterious effects of using the wrong oil takes a long time to show itself by which time the damage is done & irreversable.

Cam & tappet wear is the likely first to be measureable with the wrong oil. Benz is almost fanatical about monitoring HTHS (high temperature high shear) on the products that they approve for this very reason ~ cam & tappet wear. Most gasoline engine oils fail the Benz testing regime because they fail HTHS. Some, of course, fail in other areas like bearing staining, ring belt fouling & piston thrust side scuff etc. as well.

That's why 229.51 is so easy to pass. Diesels are not high revving due to the speed of the combustion process & do not run aggressive cams like the modern gasoline engine.

I should have done a search on Amsoil in all MB classes in this forum. I usually search in w209 only.

Good I asked. I had no idea that 229.51 was for diesel, I thought it was just an updated version of 229.5. My confusion was the Amsoil site does state that this oil is of 229.5 specs. Just to be safe, I would not use this Amsoil oil in my car.

As I said, Mobile One 0w40 is quite difficult to find and expensive in Canada. I usually change my oil every 6-6.5k miles (my FSS recommends oil change every 9.3k miles). I am interested to see if other Canadian members here use and can find other oils in the approved list locally.

AMSOIL is great at making bogus or irrelevant claims which is why I don't have any time for them.
