Engine Temps W208 CLK55

I am just trying to get an idea of what everyones engine temperature is when they are cruising and what it is when they are in traffic. If your not sure how to check, just do this, when you are driving push down the REST button your climate control for about 6 seconds, when the display changes, push the auto button til a 6 appears on the left side of the display, then tell me what the right side says. That is the actual temp of you engine. I think my car might be running a little warm in traffic.

Damn, I gotta try this too. You guys think theres anyway to get that readout to showup on a gauge or something?

Edit: Thats so cool, I just went home and picked up my CLK55 and it worked. It was short drive and no pushing it and the temp read around 189 by the time I shut the car off. What are the danger levels? Is there any way to check IAT's with this?

I figured everyone would find this interesting.

My car runs at about the same temp. I just figured it was a little hot, but someone told me they are meant to run at 200. Don't quote me on this. Just what someone told me.

Here are the other codes I've come across:
  • 01 The in-car temperature sensor.
  • 02 The bumper temperature sensor.
  • 03 The temperature of the left side heater core.
  • 04 The temperature of the right side heater core.
  • 05 The temperature at the evaporator sensor.
  • 06 The engine coolant temperature.
  • 07 The barometric pressure of the Freon.
  • 08 The Freon temperature.
  • 09 not used.
  • 10 The voltage at the heater blower control in tenths of a volt (normal is 08-6.0).
  • 20 The current at the auxiliary fan (the electric fan on radiator, in milliamps).
  • 21 Engine speed (x 100 RPM).
  • 22 Vehicle speed (km/h or mph depending on installation).
  • 23 The percentage of battery voltage at terminal 58d (99.0 = 99%).
  • 24 Battery voltage (e.g. 12.8 = 12.8V).
  • 40 The climate control software version.
  • 41 The climate control hardware version.

Cool

Got in the '55 this morning. 65 degrees outside. Let the car warm up.

Idle before driving: 180
After about 5 minutes of regular driving: 186
Home and idling another 5 minutes: 181

Judging by the numbers, I am guessing that we have a 180 degree thermostat. I hope that this helps. Haven't checked while stuck in nasty traffic though. I hope this assists you.

My normal temp on the highway is about 189. In traffic it gets to over 200. Think I hit 212 before.

You need to buy the thermostat mod from PTE like I did. I'll give you the results after I try this in my car Ahmad.

I have the thermostat Mod from PTE, but in traffic my car still reaches 203. When I'm cruising it comes down alot. But I need to figure out a way to lower the temp thrshhold to make the fan come on sooner when I'm in traffic. I talked to Patrick on the phone and he told me that it can be done on the W208, I will have to find someone with a Star,so they reprogram it for me. I'll update when I do.

Temps

Nice find. Never knew this information existed! I reached all the way to 214 with stop and go traffic and around 207 on then freeway. I did come down when I existed but seems like it runs above 180+ when driving.

An MB tech on one of the forums told me about the REST feature and I asked him what the other codes meant. I think they're listed on the WIS, but I've never checked. Later versions of the hardware/software have additional functions. For example, 11 & 12 appear on new cars.

Let me know. Is it a simple thermostat replacement or does it involve customization? What temp does it open up at and how much does it cost?

It is a 160 degree thermostat. Just email PTE, He will make you one and then send it to you. All the guys with the E55's are running them. Simply take out the old and put in the new.

LOL! Sorry! What I really meant to ask was how do you access all those other codes in order to see what the car is doing? Thanx!

Use the AUTO button. The one on the left increments the code, while the one on the right lowers the code number. For example, when you first started by pressing the REST button on your climate control, the display changed. The display had a "1" on the left and the reading from the interior temperature sensor on the right. If you push the AUTO button again (the left AUTO button), the code on the left will change to a "2" and the right side will have the reading from the temperature sensor behind the front bumper. Everytime you press the left AUTO button, the code will change to the next higher value. If you press the AUTO button on the right, the code will decrease to the next lower value. This probably sounds as clear as mud, but press the AUTO button and you'll see what I mean. It cycles through the available codes.

How do you access the thermostat to replace the part with the PTE mod? What are we talking for replacement time and difficulty? Thanks.
