The Best of Mercedes & AMG

By Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY
Cruising the streets of Southern California, officials at Kelley Blue Book, an auto-buying service, say they've seen Mercedes eight-cylinder coupes rebadged as 12-cylinder versions, a sedan with emblems that would make it a coupe, and fake high-performance AMG or Brabus.

On occasion dealers are known to stick on the badge at the dealer upon delivery. Again not at the discretion of the factory but the dealers do it.
The only way to get an AMG badge on the trunk is to get an AMG engine in your car from the factory. It's pretty cut and dry.

NO Engine, NO Badge. It should be crystal by the many times repeated.

I need your help. I'm new to MBZ and have the opportunity tomorrow to test drive what the dealer has advertised as a 2002 CLK 55 AMG Convertible, i.e. Cabriolet. It says that the vehicle is running the 5.5L M113 V8 and a 5 speed automatic transmission. The vehicle has VIN: WDBLK74G52T11022. Is this a real AMG or has someone just badged it that way in an effort to hype the sale of the car? Given the prevalence of AMG appearance packages as I understand it the easiest way for a layman/newbie to tell if a given car is the real deal is to pop the hood and see if the engine is badged and signed, is that correct? Any easy indicators like that you guys can give me to look for tomorrow would be greatly appreciated as I would rather not waste a lot of time at a dealership that is selling fake goods. Further I definitely don't want to think that I bought one thing only to find out that I actually bought another. Thanks.

Back then the CLK430 and 55s looks very similar.

Brabus does it, AMG does not.
Carlsson does it, AMG does not
Xyzzy tuner does it, AMG does not
Point is these companies WANT their names on the vehicle, engine or not. They don't see their badge as an engine indicator.
I'll leave it at that. Simple.

Seriously?! S63 rebadged as S65. Like WTF. Already such a nice car. And no, he didn't make it look "just like an S65" that dumbass didn't change the exhaust tips.
Also for some reason there's 3 Maybach 57 on eBay right now badged as "57s."
