Progress on my 55 rebuild project

The radio works now! I called Mercedes of Albuquerque to get some info about the vacuum lines, but the guy on the phone wouldn't tell me anything except: Bring it in. Fat chance, buddy. Anyway, he did tell me that the radio may need more than just 10 minutes of "on" time to reset itself to CODE. So when I parked at work today I left the key on (engine off). That was at 8. At 11 I went back out and it was ready for the code! I entered the code and the radio sprang to life . . . but the battery was too low to start. My secretary had jumper cables and one of my therapists offered to supply his pickup for the juice. No problem. I guess my "new" car has been the talk of the staff.

Next question for the owners of fully-functioning 55's: Does the tranny shift crisply? This car seems to hang on to the revs before shifting. I'm thinking it may need a tune-up, rather than a tranny issue.

Thoughts?

The "manumatic" should shift crisply if you tap if left or right On full auto it adapts to driver style so it may not shift crisply if you have a leisurely right foot.

so the trans shifting is somewhat adaptive. There's supposedly a way to reset it to factory shifting standards. It's in one of the forums here...maybe 210 or 211? If you search it should come up. Something about changing the key position and pushing the gas and brake back and forth...very strange procedure. Many people claim it works wonders tho.

Glad you got the radio fixed! Keep us posted!

that method works, but the "reset" doesnt last...the computer eventually resets itself back to "dont kill yourself" mode...ha, but it's definitely fun while it lasts....!

Here's a shot of the front vacuum lines. I'll leave it on my site for a few days. If some *socially conscious* individual complains about the three vacuum lines in this photo, I may remove it sooner.

You may want to get a WIS or a Star Classic Service manual. WIS' are available on Ebay. I've seen the WIS anywhere from $25 to $100. The Star Classic Service manual is from $60 to $125, depending on where you order it.
