I get this minor vibration around 40mph + and gets weaker up in 60

Everytime I drive around 40mph, I get this minor vibration.
and it gets weaker up in 60.. but not completely gone.

I thought it was wheel balance, but it is still there after I balanced my tire in
Disount tire. So I took it to the dealer and described them what's going on, and they said it gotta be wheel balance, but I refused to do it at the dealer because I know how much they are gonna charge me : )

Do you guys think it is Discount tire who didn't do there job well? or something els.... I can certainly take it back to Discount tire and redo the balance since they offer lifetime balance..

FWIW, I had my SL tires balanced 5 times at Discount and they still could not get the shake out of it. I gave up on tire shops... Take it to MBL and talk to Garrett. Had MBL balance the tires and that took care of the problem.

This weekend I noticed a rear tire out of balance at 185mph so I'll take it back to the dealer to re-balance ;-)

If you feel it through the steering wheel try looking at the steering damper. Cheap, and easy to replace. Also the bearings may be loose. I had a slight vibe at 40mph when I bought mine, and it turned out to be the front bearings. I checked them, and just ended up replacing them. Took care of the issue.

I doubt it... if the wheel were bent, they couldn't even make the wheel in balance and would have told me

The way you were talking about your wifes driving a bent wheel might be possible.

A few suggestions...

Lower control arm bushings
Motor mounts
Driveshaft or flex disc
Tire(s) out of round
Alignment

Good luck!

Don't trust tirer places I had my tires put on that I bought online at a Goodyear tire place.
I drove the car out and new right then that they did not balance them right. I took them to my place of work and sure enough 3 of the 4 were out I did the 3 and all is good. So nerver trust anyone.

If you go to discount tire, tell them you want the tires balanced "alloy 2". I used to work for discount/americas tire a long time ago. This is thee very best balance anyone can do... If the shake is in the steeing wheel, then most of the time its balance. If the shake is through out the whole car... I'd bet something else is wrong... When they put the rim assembly on the balancer, ask them to watch personally for any kind of bend also. It is easily noticable when the rim and tire spinning at that rate to see any kind of bend as the wheel will "wobble". Hope this helps.

WOW...someone else with my problem!
I have a vibration that comes on right at 40-45mph then pretty much disappears above that speed. I feel it in the drivers door and the steering wheel so I would say its the whole car. Had all the tires balance and checked for bent rims at the dealership. So that wasn't the problem.
They had the head tech guy drive it and he thought it felt like the driveshaft might be out of alignment? He said something about the transmission mounts might be colapsed and I think he mentioned a flex disc being busted as well. This is just what he thought....no clear cut evidence.
All I asked him was "is it expensive to fix?" and he said yes and I said "well, I'll live with a vibration at 45mph." lol
I know I have to get it fixed sooner or later but I don't know if I want them tearing up my car searching for this vibration.
Let me know what yours ends up being.

Probably. I think thats why the guy said it would be a bit of money because they would have to take stuff apart to see whats wrong. I don't really remember what he said so I may be wrong.

Easy is a relative term, but a flex disc is very easy to change. Eight bolts hold it in place. With my car on ramps in the garage, either flex disc (front or rear) can be out in 10 minutes. Dealer price for parts is $125. $90 at Autohaus AZ.

Stiggs, drive down to SoCal. You can stop off at Autohaus on the way in. We'll swap out both flex discs, take some photos, and make a DIY web page. It'll be a smooth 3000 mile drive back home.

I have this same problem exactly, 40 mph up to about 60 mph when first driving car, the vibration actually goes away after driving awhile, i.e. 30 minutes or so, I was originally thinking tires as well but now do not know what to think.

Yep!!! we are in the same boat.

It is worse when car is cold or not driven for a while. and it gets very weaker once it is warmed up.

I will try to get my engine and tranny mount replaced and than flex disc. so I can find out what the hell is wrong..
