best way to determine is to take it to the dealer. they will go over it with a fine tooth comb. i think the cost to me was $150.

however I recall they recommended the following:
Brake system flush
Cooling system flush and thermostat
replace idler pulley and serpentine belt
replace air filters
replace plugs and wires
power steering flush
transmission service
engine mounts
transmission mount
oil and filter change
replace fuel filter

This may help. In addition to what others have said (transmission service, pulley check, etc.), I'd check the diff side seals.

speaking of seals.....i hear the rear main seal is notorious for leaking on these engines.

MarcusF, with all the info you have and give, guess you could be a Forum by yourself

pilot bushing is part of the electrical connector on the side of the transmission, it's notorious for leaks and usually replaced when doing transmission filter/fluids.

Thanks for the complements, but I don't know so much. I'm just an MBCA guy who takes notes. That's where the true knowledge resides.

Like yesterday at the SFV meet, a guy named Scott with a 59 Ponton (190D) was parked next to an absolute mint '62 250 SE CAB, when in drives Scott with his four star 72 250 SE 3.5 coupe . . . . . . . . . . I'm sorry, what were we talking about again . . . . . . . . . . . . oh yeah . . . . . . . . if you haven't done so already, you might want to toss the OE steering damper. A new one is about $30 from Autohaus AZ.

I'll check that receipt from the main dealer who did the g/box oil/filter/seal

I must admit I didn't check hoping they would do all necessary at that service - so really I should have checked they did it at that point

Slowsy - thanks - need to check that. If treated well these engines/cars should last for ever but good maintenance is essential

I've been reading about these Magnecor wires but can't find where to get them. Anyone got a link? Do I buy a roll of wire or do they sale 16 wires? Thanks guys!!

I think I found them. Has anyone tried these? Any pics? Do they come already made or do you have to put them together?

If you
take care and use the proper tool when removing the wires to do the plugs you won't need new wires. Unless you torch them they will outlast the engine.
Mag wires are one of the biggest single causes of hard to track down misfire issues. Not worth the money.
All 4 o2 sensors are due.
If you need the factory 100k maint list PM me and I'll dig it up.

ohlord:

when you said all 4 o2 sensors needs to be replaced, why? i replaced the front two and the mech said since the rear o2 are downstream and less important, just wait to cel comes on. Is it better to replace the rear also before the cel?

Down stream get old andlazy also.
If they do and slow to respond you lose mpg.
Some people wait on the post ones.Although while under there under 400 bucks for all 4 and diy them at the same time makes sense.

No anti seize on the spark plugs.
O2 approved anti seize on the o2 sensors.

good advice...my gas mileage has been pretty low lately even though i replaced just about everything...

could it cause some minor vibration at idle in park or drive?

Probably not
if it was a misfire at idle it would toss a code. Check the motor mounts.

done twice, motor/transmission mounts

very slight vibration during idle or park...could just be old engine or fuel injector not spraying properly? i've tried techron 3x...

it was pretty bad at one point last year, replaced lazy front o2 sensors...helped a little...replaced crank position sensor and it helped alot...

it's just not as smooth as couple years ago during idle or park...

New fuel injectors makes a big difference. I had mine change and it sure does idle smoother.

Did someone say they wanted links?

The Los Angeles section of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America has a preferred vendors section, with an Internet sub-section. Pelican, Autohaus, Performance Products (new owner), Rock and others are all listed there. That's a good place to look if you can't remember where something is. In direct answer to your question, Autohaus AZ is a good vendor. Alternatively, factory part number 2202400617 (AKA the W209 mount - other posters have used it on V8 W208s) is allegedly an updated, stronger design. 2202400617 costs about twice as much as the OEM W208 part from Autohaus. Since the W209 part also works with the S600 (V12) & CLK63, it probably is much stronger. Dealer list price is $155, but MB of Annapolis (who is a dealer) sells via the web for $115.

The trans mount is less than $20 at Autohaus. Pelican didn't list prices, so I can't say whether they have a good deal or not.

MarcusF, are you sure that the W209 motor mount (2202400617) is a direct fit/improvement for the W208? Im in the market now for some mounts. I have started the 100k miles list for my car. Heres my tune up list:

Me "sure"? No. All I can personally say is other posters "claim" to have used them, and they are allegedly updated and stronger. For a first hand report, you'll have to search threads and track down posters who have used them. My 208 mounts were replaced with 208 mounts when they wore out.
