Pros & Cons: Larger Tires on Standard wheels?
The standard AMG monoblocks wheels are 7.5 X 17 for the front, 8.5 X 17 for the rear.
Is there any advantage in using larger tires than the standard 225/45/17 for the front & 225/40/17 for the rear on the standard wheels?

I have been considering this too. I think it would look nicer having wider tires in the back. They look pretty whimpy at 245/40. It should grip better. It may slightly throw off the balance from understeer to oversteer for example or something along those lines. I do not plan to use my car at a track and will rarely if ever have it handling at 10/10th's of its maximum so that point is irrelevent to me.
What is the widest tire the stock wheel will handle both front and (most importantly) rear?

For the standard rear wheel - 8.5 J X 17 - the max. width is 255.
As per many charts, incl. this Potenza S-03, the best rated tire according to the forum sponsor Tirerack.

It's strange.
I listed this question under the "Wheels & Tire..." section and so far ZERO response.
Increased tire WIDTH is the most inexpensive way of improving appearance & handling: $60.- per set of tires!!

This question really depends on your driving style. If you're going to go with 19's it will look really nice but watch out for them potholes. One serious hit and that's an expensive wheel/tire to fix.

My 2c worth...
I think you'd have to go 235/40/17 and 255/35/17 if it's available. This way, the diameter won't increase too much.. Less likelihood of ESP/ABS/speedo calibration getting screwed up. Also, if you have Comand, you'd have to re-calibrate; but that's easy.

The revolutions per mile are 10 less for front and 10 less for the rear: 833 v 823 and 840 v 830.
