Gas Cap Holder

Can anyone tell me if they know how the gas cap is stored when re fueling? I persoanlly cant figure it out, and hate the fact the gas cap is touching the paint of the car during re fueling. Just to clearify. When you open the gas cap, there is ( or isn't there ) a tongue shaped gizmo on the inside of the little door to hold the gas cap during fueling. Your insight is appreciated.

I haven't figured out how that wire apparatus is supposed to hold the gas cap, either.

Every time I fuel up, I am delicately balancing the cap, wedged in the wire form behind the fuel filler door, and then inserting the fuel filler nozzle from the gas pump. The slightest bump can upset the cap, so I have learned to be extremely careful.

Entirely different from the way my other M-B's are set up. They all retain the caps quite securely while fueling.

It's the wrong gas cap holder. One of those things you need to live with unless someone figures out a solution.

Oh no! The wrong holder! What will we ever do?

I guess, we'll have to think of some other reason than gas cap holders to be able to enjoy our cars . . .

. . . let's see now, what could that be?

Oh wait, I know . . .

That explains the lack of performance!

Now, try to make the mental adjustment to use the gas cap on another car with another fuel type.

Is this thing the same on all Mercedes or does it depend on the model? I can't remember exactly what it looked like on my W203 but IIRC it worked pretty much the same as the one on my W211. It kind of cradles it sideways. I have attached a picture of my W211. Hope this is helpful.

Because of the fender flares on the CLK 63BS the gas filler door is smaller causing a smaller spring/holder than the W211 and other models.

Thanks for all the helpful information as well as the not so helpful comedic attempts. I guess i will continue to cringe every time I fill'er up. You would think that mercedes would have put some engineering muscle ( in regards to the gas cap holder) behind the $140,000 sticker. BTW, I am still abound with thrills every time I turn the beast on and drive. Enjoy Gents.

Final Solution

Don't forget . . . duct tape can always solve a myriad of problems . . .

I believe it is model specific, although they might use the same aparatus on more than one model. Thanks for the pic but the one in the BS is different. In my SL55, the gas cap would actually fit in the holder.
