First time purchase '13 cls550 or no?

Hey guys, new to the Mercedes world. Well, not yet. I just compulsively privately sold my 2012 Camaro 2ss the other day so I am currently car less and in the market. I want to upgrade to something luxurious and fast. I do not like "normal" cars (Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, etc). I have been looking at Tahoe LTZ's, stingrays, audis, bmw, pretty much everything.. I loved my Camaro, was fast and fun but not so much luxurious. I test drove a $45,000.00 36,000 mile pearl 2013 cls550 today (capital euro cars Tallahassee if you want to see it) and I fell in love with it. I am 24 years old and my main concern is being stuck upside down with a car payment. I hear that Mercedes and cars similar to Mercedes devalue very fast. I plan on putting 20k cash down on it up front. But out the door I am looking at 50k dollars. The dealership will not budge a dime on the car as its "certified pre owned". It does have a unlimited mile warranty for ONE year, and a available 2yr extension for 3400.00. Which they wouldn't throw in either.. I literally love every bit about the car, the seats, the features, the acceleration is so effortless and it glides over everything. I absolutely love the car. But I don't love buyers remorse. I want to make the right choice and not be stuck with a fast devaluation. I am also very concerned about the reliability of Mercedes being a European vehicle, I hear they can break down and have many problems? I want reliability ESPCIALLY if I am spending fifty thousand dollars.. What is everyone's opinions on this particular Mercedes model? After what I've disclosed do you think it's a wise buy? Please let me know what you think, I am deciding tomorrow.

As others have said, check the maintenance and repair record through the dealer. You are buying a used car and if not maintained properly the warranty may not cover you. Many feel that you have to have an extended warranty as things break, and it is very expensive to repair. If you want a reliable car get a Honda or Toyota....but it will not be the same driving experience. And yes your cost per mile will be high, as value declines rapidly. I have a friend who bought a mb s class through carmax, much cheaper than the dealer, had the dealer inspect and run the maintenance records and bought extended warranty through carmax, which is cheaper and covers you through their repair service or you can take the car to the dealer and they will pay the dealers price for the repair less fifty dollars. I will check this out on my next car.

This car has already taken the greatest depreciation hit already don't forget it was nearly $90-95k full loaded in 2013

The engine is solid as is the trans and if CPO then you have that guarantee via the dealership so don't sweat the details too much as they wouldn't have done a CPO otherwise.

You may be better spending the $50k otd on a new or lightly used Lexus or Infiniti if you truly want trouble free or worry free

Take your time, there are plenty of clean cars out there. IMO: I'd also put down only the amount necessary, hold on to the extra cash and either save or invest. With today's interest rates, the total amount you'll be paying over the life of the loan will be negligible. If you're concerned about lowering your monthly payment amount then of course stretch the term. Def buy the extended warranty with any used vehicle, especially a Mercedes. Be sure to find out specifically what the warranty covers and the deductable amount. Also recommend a tire and wheel warranty and gap insurance on any vehicle if you've never purchased those. Saved me plenty of times. Have not heard of any issues in particular with that model. I also do not see the value in CPO vehicles. I'd find a comparable car, clean with no body/paint work, complete service records, and clean carfax for much much less and buy yourself and extended warranty. Good luck, hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the advice, dealing with sales people putting all sorts of things in my head had my brain running crazy lol. I ended up with the Lexus gs350 fsport simply because of the warranty (7yr 250k) it has the same luxury features but what I don't like is the v6. Was without a car so I had two days to decide. I LOVE the cls550 but as far as a wise financial choose between the two the Lexus seemed like the winner. Hopefully I can buy a newly used Benz in the near future. They're amazing vehicles.

We put $12k down on ours and paid cash for the extended warranty. Cost was about the same as what you're being charged. I'm not worried about it. We could have paid cash for it.

Well we have the 14 CLS550 and an 11 yr old Lexus SC 430. Have to say I really enjoy both cars for different reasons. Like the OP said the CLS is so effortless in accel and comfort while being pretty decent in the twisties. But it is less reliable. The old 20th century V8 in the Lexus is no match for the Benz V8tt but it has a reliability and simplicity that is very nice. And that old car can still hustle at 100 mph down the freeway without any strain so kudos to Lexus for building a bullet proof engine. Plan on keeping both for quite a while. The OP will be happy with the GS but would have been at least as happy with a CLS I think.

OP stated that the cls550 he's looking at is CPO.
Mercedes Benz CPO?
You mentioned 1 year unlimited miles and extended 2 yrs with extra cash?
Well, here was my deal from Natick Mercedes Benz dealership in Massachusetts last month.
One owner 2012 cls550 diamond white, AMG package, loaded with everything $85k original sticker, leased returned, CPO, 6 yrs ( starts from first dated service) unlimited miles, including first 2 yrs 20k miles maintaine including, current mileage is 28k, just had 4 rotors and pads replacement as free of charge, no deductible, remains bumper to bumper until 05/30/2018. Warranty directly from MB. Total cost before taxes and fee $45,498.
I hope this helps

I would like to change the grille to the new diamond type.

I paid 43,200 for a CPO 2013 CLS550 with 46k back in November of 15 from Mercedes Benz of Fort Washington in PA. I emailed him, explained that I was a dealer etc, and that this was what I wanted to pay. He gave me my price on my trade (2011 BMW 535i) and came within 1000 of my price on his car. I made him throw in a 3rd key and all weather mats to kind of make up the difference. The car currently has 51k and is bumper to bumper CPO till 4/30/18. With the unlimited mileage warranty my theory is you are better off with a bit higher miles but the newest in service date you can find. I basically had almost 2.5 years of bumper to bumper warranty when I bought mine. By then I'll be ready to move on. Deals should be better now since I see MORE of the w218's coming through the auctions as the 13's come off lease en masse.

Take care,

George
