Buying guide for CLS
I am new here and time has come to try my first mercedes. I owned in the years many cars. Right now using a bmw e61 facelift 535d(tuned).
Not a bad car but dont like it so much as my woman doesnt. Specialy beacause its a wagon and slow xD
So we have looked and looked and found the cls (c218) very beatiful and nice.
We cant deside witch engine to choose or it will ve rwd or 4matic.
We have looked fors the cls500 with the 4.7tt engine wich makes 300kw(400hp) or the 350cdi 195kw(260hp).
In my country gasoline is expensive 1.5e a litre (1.66us a 0.26 gallons). Diesel cheaper and car consume less but it wont go as good like the petrol one. Both have they ups and downs but i dont nothing about mercedes so i ask you people.
wich are good side and the bad side of pertol and the diesel engine.
How is the upkeep, realibility and how much fuel does the twin turbo v8 engine consume in reality? Beacause on paper they tell its suprisingly economical for the power.
Ofc u if someone can say about the diesel to.
And the second problem is the 4 matic. How does it handle the power and how good is it?
Beacause il tune the car anyway. Diesel or petrol it will have new software tune and for the petrol i would like the v8 sound come out more so exhaust to.
Any info and help is welcome.
Sorry for my english, not my native language.

We don't have the diesel model here in the US, so we have the CLS550 (CLS500 in Europe) and for a couple of years, we had the CLS400 V6 model. I have a CLS550 and it's tuned and produces approx. 510HP and huge torque. I love the smooth power developed by the M278 engine. From all reports, it's pretty bulletproof in design and durability. My last car was a Cadillac CTS 3.6L V6 that had many design problems (including failing AWD systems). My CLS is the 4Matic and it works flawlessly and I haven't read of any problems with the design. I live in Colorado and frequently drive in the mountains and get very resonable MPG. I just returned from a 650 mile trip through the mountains and got 25.1 MPG for the trip. Maybe others will answer other comments. Good Luck, Marv

I get about 21 mpg, mostly highway. Very happy w the car.
. Hahaha, just messing. I know its farther for you guys than it is for me.Every time I've seen Marv post his MPG averages I've wondered how he achieves that. I don't drive my car hard at all and I have never hit those kinds of numbers on my CLS. I'm usually in E mode too so not like i'm driving in S or anything like that. I always use 93 Octane from BP. On occasion I will use Sunoco Ultimate or Shell if nothing else is around. So not like I'm using cheap gas.
Now, as for 16MPG, thats indicative of a heavy foot
and acceptable to me w a car like ours. At least you are enjoying it. I don't drive mine as much as I should but when I do it is very fun and satisfying.

I could not be happier with the performance of this car and I wish they had kept that wonderful V8 twin turbo because when the warranty runs out next year I want to buy another. I have not driven the new in-line 6 so I can't say for sure but I just don't see how it will match what I have now. I shudder to think what a tune or AMG CLS would do. I'm in my '70s now and the stock M278 is about all this old man can handle!
saddly i dont know any mb junkys here who owns car like that or amg one. Need 2 do research about that. Need 2 sell my car first but at detsember noone likes to buy cars, or BMW 😅
