CLS550 Track Day! (Thunderhill Road Course Willows, CA)

Well, I did a track day in my Benz! I figured my CLS550 doesn't have that fancy air suspension for no reason. Put it into Sport mode and the transmission in manual mode, and I went rippin' around the 2.2-mile course. Fairly tight, 40-70mph sweepers. I was in pretty fast company, since it was a beginner day we had pace cars, but they were fast. Last group was a C8 Corvette and a BMW on slicks and I was probably at 90% trying to keep up. It's not the same rush as drag racing but it definitely was a good time. We did 3 20 minute sessions and it felt like you were out on the track for about 2 minutes! I would say I was faster than the Challengers, Camaros, and older Corvettes, about even with the Mustangs, and slower than the BMWs and C8s. Not bad for a 4400lb car...the Benz turned out to be very capable. Tires were 340 treadwear Continental Extreme Contacts.

That's great to hear! I will be taking mine there in a few weeks. How did your brakes perform?

If it's the West course it's kind of a non-issue, there's a lot of sweepers but not a whole bunch of hard braking....just the last turn before the straight. Have fun out there it was definitely a good time for me! (Caution, video is actually faster than it appears LOL)

Cool you get any pics? You see what I meant about not braking much? Yeah I thought my CLS held its own against some of the more sporty type cars.....Vettes and Mustangs and Camaros and BMWs and such.

most of the folks that were there had 911s and aside from the body roll it felts pretty solid. Definitely a more comfortable experience compared to the other track-focused cars I rode in.

Your wheel/tire combo looks like it might be a little more track focused than mine too. I noticed the body roll even in Sport mode, but it was a whole lot better than Comfort....didn't even try that setting lol. I mean it still is a 4100lb car at the end of the day, but yeah, I thought the CLS did pretty well. You ever taken yours to the dragstrip?

the wheel/tires definitely helped in addition to being lowered a bit. Even with that though, there was definitely some body roll in Sport. As it was my first time doing any of this I just left the suspension and transmission in sport and focused on staying on the asphalt. I haven't tried a dragstrip yet but we did have some fun on the way up there. I am itching for a TCU tune now, but regardless the car did a good job of being in the right gear at the right time. Also felt like the cars adaptations reset after a few laps because it became quite responsive.

You don't get going that fast on that track, maybe 100 mph or a little over. Most are 40-70mph corners.

yeah that sounds about right, I was just focused on doing what the instructor was telling me that I didn't really pay attention to my speedometer just tried to get as quick as possible while maintaining grip. The fastest I've taken the car in general is about 153mph.

No it's a boat...no doubt about that. Only step bigger is something like an older Lincoln LOL. That being said I think both of us were surprised at how well the CLS did. I mean they pull almost 0.9G on the skidpad so they're not bad at handling, they're just.....big.

I have one on my C63 and love that low rumble, but rhe X pipe has got the wondering what I should do. What mid pipe do you have and how do you like yours? Or anyone's input would be awesome. I have till 1 pm to make up my mind.

I decided on an X pipe at the center resonator position and I think it's just enough growl. Nice rumble, no drone and does not compete with my audio setup inside. From what I remember when I went down that same rabbit hole is that most of the sound is deadened by the two little resonators after the catalytic converters and of course the cats themselves.

I ended up doing a X pipe for the first time and its better than id though for sound. I have 3" MBH catless DPs to X pipe all the way back to CLS63 square tips. O2 spacers with mini catalyst to keep the CEL off. Can't just tune them out here in Phoenix. It wont let 1 of the readiness show pass, we need 2 of 3 to pass emissions. I have a MBH tune with air box spacers with high flow filters.
