Nope , just a Allen wrench. Get a good look at it first ,only takes a quarter turn to open.
The oil really flies out of there , be ready
When changing oil on all exotic cars I always measure what I take out and return same amount , it gives you a good starting point , pretty simple on the gts.

And while Mercedes says to replace the plastic plug I see no reason to do that since I own my car and would notice any oil leak if it ever happened. I do replace the copper washer on the engine sump though.

I found if you add 6.5 quarts you will not over fill the car. Just found out the hard way how to do it.

Thanks Katie,

Last year I took the car to have the dealer did the service and they overfilled the oil. After I drove off the their lot, i got the message on my dash telling me that too much oil so I drove back to have the dealer drain out some oil.

Yes strange enough if you follow WIS directions it tells you the capacity and I followed the directions to a T and ended up with the overfill TWO oil changes in a row. I decided to simple deduct ONE quart from the WIS directions and no more overfill messages. I suspect the dealer followed the directions when they did your car and you got the message.

Would you happen to have the part #s for the copper washer and the drain plug by any chance?

The part number for the copper washer on NAPA's site is NOE 7043005 (with lots of cross references). I've looked everywhere I can think of to find the plastic drain plug (not the one on the oil pan, but the one on the reservoir. I cannot find the right part anywhere.

I hope somebody will chime in to one of these threads at some point!

Changed the oil in the GTC a number of times. I realize the directions say to replace the PLASTIC drain plug. I decided it is not necessary. It costs about 15 dollars at the dealer and it has a o ring on it. My plug looks great every time I change the oil and there are NO leaks after the change. PS you use an allen wrench to remove the plastic plug.

I would look up the part number on EPC but like I said it has become apparent that the part is not needed to be replaced. IF I was doing the oil on someone elses car yes I would change the plug but this is my car and I know when there is an oil leak if it were to happen.

There was already a long discussion on this plug in the forum. I remember the first time I changed the oil I went to get a new plug. I saw it in my hands (all 15 follars worth) and said to myself why would this be an item that goes bad? When you see it in your hands you will probably understand. I get changing the copper crush washer but not the plastic plug. If it leaks I will know.

So Katie, the reason they specify replacement is because the seal (o-ring) is part of the assembly and not offered as a separate replacement. Engineering practice is that a seal such as o-rings, crush washers, etc., is a one use only item and replaces new each time it cycles. Same with crush washers or rubber gasket washers that are captive in the assembly and cannot be replaced separately, the manufacturer's spec, sticking to sound engineering practice, must be to replace the entire plug. Same on my Bentley that comes with a captive crush washer on the oil drain plug.

But in practice, you're pretty safe with a reuse, probably a few times too, if the o-ring doesn't appear dried out, cracked, etc. And, as you say, since you're doing the work and know what to look for, you can keep an eye on it.

This is one of those items, I'd love to know how many actually do get replaced at dealers everywhere; or, are sitting new unopened in techs toolboxes. They have to order the part from the parts department with oil changes so it shows on the invoice, but....

Dont get me wrong if I was changing the oil on someone elses car I would change the plug every time. But since I own my car and know that the car monitors oil level as well as I can see if there is a leak on the garage floor I have NO issue reusing the plug.

So there is no chance of misinterpretation, I'm right with you Katie. If I take the plug out of my car and inspect the o-ring and it meets my expectations, I wouldn't hesitate putting it right back in too. I'm with you!
