How to reinstall rear strut bar cover

Does anyone know how to clip this back in? I have tried, but it won't securely clip back on...

Those two metal clips on the bar look like they have to be pulled off and attached to the cover, and the cover and clips have to be pushed onto the end all at once. Kind of like a one time push...

Aha, ok, thank you. That's what I was doing wrong. With the metal clips on the plastic cover, you have to still get the metal clips onto the strut, so you have to push left 'beyond' the end of the strut, then right, to seat the clips?

hey Surge, I haven't done this personally but just by doing these types of things over time and in looking at it, it seems to be a "one unit" thing. Sometimes the clips have to be secured to the cover first, and the unit with the cover and clips all have to be pushed on at once to attach. By all means dont force it, but see if you can remove the clips first...

Unfortunately the metal clips won’t go on the plastic cover. I can’t seem to get it on. It’s a major pain! I recommend not removing this cover.

In the end I applied 3M VHB double sided tape across the metal clips, just ahead of the tabs, and a piece on the underside of the plastic cover. It seems to be holding. I don’t see how else to do it - you can’t push the plastic cover in far enough to get past the metal tabs so that they engage and lock in. Not with your hands anyway, or even a mallet. The mallet just pushes the metal clips further away.

The funny thing is that it was obvioulsy engineered to be put on when they were fabricating the car, strange it can't be recreated!

I agree. I spent well over an hour trying. Those 2 metal clips have tabs which are supposed to engage plastic fingers or tabs on the cover.
I could not push the cover in far enough to get the tabs to engage. I tried everything: lowering the tabs, raising them, squeezing the cover, pushing it from the sides, the top, bottom... nothing!
It was clear that my service tech, who’s really good, also couldn’t do it, as the cover was loose when I picked the car up.
Perhaps at the factory they use a special tool to secure the covers?

Also, the cover scratches the strut bar as you slide it back and forth. I was able to remove the scratches with polyWatch.

Anyway, I think the VHB double sided tape will work - after all, MB used it (and nothing else) to secure the hood vents on the W204 C63 Black Series and 507!
