New to me 2017 AMG GTS needs engine replacement

FYI,
Intro to joining this forum;

I do all my own work and maintenance on my MB cars. My cars are a 2007 SL55 AMG with the P30 option and a 2007 S65 AMG.
For others I'm currently replacing a 2006 S65 AMG V12 engine and a 2009 SL63 AMG engine with a Weistec SC on it.

I have now aqcquired a 2017 AMG GTS with 27K miles and a perfect body (see attached pictures) however it needs an engine replacement. I do have a complete engine (13K miles-see attached pictures) that is going to be installed in the car.

I'll be sharing the progress made on the AMG GTS project ones I get further into it and have the facts why the original engine of the 2017 failed (It's assumed that the PO ran the car over an object that caused dry-sump hose to the tank get damaged).

Any information or insight from other DIY members with AMG GTS experience will be appreciated.
I do have the complete MB SDS Xentry and W.I.S setup.

Thank you

Engine comes down as a unit with the torque tube and rear transaxle. We had to borrow a second lifting table for the first one we did. But other than that, pretty straight forward engine removal.

Thank you for that info and confirmation of what I expected was needed.
You have any details on the lifting tables you used?
I have a 4 poster and a 2 post lift available

The ones we had were dealer supplied shop equipment and quite expensive, but in essence something like this https://www.northerntool.com/shop/to...B&gclsrc=aw.ds
You have to lower it all down as a unit, so it's not really possible with one. I assume it could be done with jacks and stands and such, but man would it be an expensive mistake if it fell over while doing so. Just be super careful.

Thanks for that info - I have a close working relationship with my local MB dealer service manager and they are very interested in doing it for me, as I have quite work load on hand in house (V-12 & SL63 engine exchanges) and won't be able to get started on the AMG GTS exchange for the next 6-8 weeks I may go ahead and let them them take care of it.

All parts are out, ready for the replacement to go in, since it's all out I have decided to replace the carbon fiber driveshaft for the newer (HD model) that has come out.

As I get into more engine rebuilds/replacements (V12 pic attached) than my GTS only I have decided to get one of the AGA tools lift tables (see pics attached)

Nice, you won't regret it, they are super convenient for powertrain removals.

Seeing the V12 work you do, wouldn't be interested in buying my '03 CL600 would you? Needs some work but letting it go cheap. Can send you full details if you want.

Hi Hendrik, very interested in you project, I wonder if you ran into any issues? I am currently preparing to do a similar swap on 2020 AMG GT C. Thanks

You'll need a lift table, everything has to come out from under need, while things were out I upgrades the drive shaft to the latest model and after the replacement engine was in I had to correct one issue with a wire that runs from the engine oil sensor to the ECU.

All is well now, my car is running great.

What's your reason to swap out the engine and do you have a replacement already?

LOL, with your project!

Amg GT c engine swap

Thank you so much for the heads up on that oil sensor wire. The reason for project is it had some water come in through the air filters and hydro locked the engine. Four rods got bent. So if there is more damage I will have to put in a new unit.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. So your engine is out and apart? I still have my original engine and one of these days, when other project are completed will take of the lower crank case to see what exactly happened.

The word that I got from the PO is that a piece of re-bar came through the belly pan and cut into the hose/pipe from the engine to the oil reservoir and she/he kept on driving.

Best H

No the engine is still in the car, I was able take the lower crank case open and put a snake in to see what is damaged. One of the chains also came off. So I I can just put new rods in then it would be great. I was planing to drop it next week. Is your engine seized ?

I'll send you a pm -

Right now I'm finishing up the rebuild on a SL63 AMG > https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...-headbolt.html
My GTS motor is sitting on a rotating engine stand and after I complete the SL63 project in the next 7-10 days I can open the crank case and inspect it.
