From an AMG GT (Base) to a GT-R. What's difference from a 2019 to 2020?

I have a 2020 AMG GT (base) and am looking to upgrade to a GT-R. I cannot wrap my head around the difference between a 2019 and a 2020+. The reason I ask is I found a 2019 Green Hell GT-R with extremely low miles for a great price. I also found a 2020 with a little more miles, but it's almost $30,000 more. When I asked the Mercedes dealership about feature differences, they left me with "upgraded infotainment area." Honestly, I like the idea of the mechanical center console better, anyways. The dash is lacking a modern touch, but it's not a determining factor. I wanted to get some input on if a 2019 Green Hell GT-R is a good year/build.

Thank you!

USA model year GT R 2019 vs 2020:

2019 will be significantly louder, as the 2020 model (i believe) had to be fitted with an additional particulate filter (OPF) exhaust side.
I also test drove 2018 and 2019 models back to back and actually found the 2019 to be a tad bit louder than 2018.

2019 will have the classic, no-nonsense mechanical buttons and knobs respecting the original "V-8" design concept of center console and Analog gauges with CF background, in addition to a Wheel +Touch-pad infotainment navigation.
The 2020 will have rectangular TFT buttons on center console, full Digital screen for gauges (much higher replacement cost if fails), with option for Touch-pad vs. Wheel (but not both)

2020 has the 'updated' Headlights, but in my opinion, this 2020 daytime lamp design ("squinty" appearance) is more tame and less sinister looking than the original Headlights with more aggressive appearance of the daytime lighting angle.

2020 has the side cannards/lip extensions for front bumper, which can easily be retro-fitted on 2019 and earlier MYs (https://mbworld.org/forums/coupe-roa...20-2018-a.html).

Other differences that 2020 has, over the 2019:
P44 –Parking Package –Now includes a Front Camera
U88 –AMG Drive Unit Steering Wheel Controls
NTG 5.5 including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and AMG Track Pace
New 12.3” fully digital instrument cluster
New 10.25” multimedia center display

In my mind, to maximize Warranty, etc and still preserve the loud exhaust notes and classic/analog gauges, I chose to go with the 2019.

And for a $30K pricing difference, the 2019 appears to be a no-brainer if mileage and condition, etc are similar.

I had a 2018 coupe and now have a 2020 roadster. I liked the ergonomics (buttons) of the 2018 a lot more than the 2020. The 2020 has small screens (which are poorly lit on the center console and hard to see and operate on the steering wheel) and it is distracting to use them. Buttons are much better since you don't have to look at them to make sure you are doing what you want.

All things otherwise equal, I'd go for the 2019. I now wish I'd bought a 2019 roadster, but none were available in mid 2020.

I have a 19’ GTR.. i do prefer the 2020 headlights but i like the analog center console better…

If u ever decide to do downpipes then u dont need to worry about particulate filter on 2020 and up

2020 additions:

- front camera
- integrated apple carplay (wired)
- updated infotainment (and larger display screen)
- digital dash
- digital buttons in center console
- updated front headlights
- updated steering wheel & controls
- touchpad control (optional)
- steering quick control buttons (for exhaust, drive mode etc)

The delta in cost between 2019 and 2020 has remained pretty significant. Underneath these updates the car remains the same from a drivetrain/performance standpoint. The added cost is from these items, typically lower mileage, and of course, added warranty coverage due to the year of the car.

Several of these additions are minuses in my opinion. I've bolded those, above. All things being equal (and if you want a sweet exhaust note), I'd buy the 2019.

Hi Scott,

I pretty much agree with you on your reasoning and choices although my bolded list would be longer than yours on an item maybe two.

Best,

I looked at 2020 and l decided with the 2019 GT-R bc bit more analog with better exhaust note.

I do miss a front camera a bit that the 2020’s include.

That said, I can have the front camera retrofitted like factory by a local audio professional.

Speaking of Front Camera from the 2020 MY - does anyone have the MB Part # for this?

MBNRG - Part Number: 000-905-55-05 is the camera for a 2020 GTR, and Part Number: 190-884-00-00 is the front camera bracket.

Has anyone added the OE or any other brand camera to the front bumper?

I posted about a well-integrated aftermarket front camera that I installed on our C63 S:
https://mbworld.org/forums/c63-c63s-...ml#post8019562

There's also a picture of the camera view in that thread. They may also have one that works in your vehicle.

Hi,

Also from me, a great thanksgiving to all.
Is this the biggest national holiday in America? (After the Superbowl)
There is thanksgiving in Germany, but it was rarely celebrated.

The NAV model described above uses the AUX input of the command. Not badly done. Might work on GT too (try W205 setting)

In the GT models without a front camera, the reversing camera is connected directly to the command. (+ Ground, +12V , +HMI CAN Bus)

As far as I know (I have no circuit diagrams), the models from (real) construction year 12/2018 (those with a stock front camera) have an extra camera control unit.
Both cameras are connected to this and signals are transmitted from this to the head unit (command).
If the bus input and output signals (camera input, steering angle, direction of travel, speed, etc. are needed) have not changed, you should be able to make it ready for operation "like stock".

I seem to remember that the rear camera was also changed.

Question:
Does the stock front camera also have these steering guide lines?

Kind regards.

Stenzel

If it is me, I'd go with facelift …Every day usability becomes so much easier.
Integrated car play means you dont have to mount your phone on the dash for navigation like you drive for Uber/Lyft anymore
Also, front camera is really useful when parking into concrete parking blocks to not scratch the front lip, because I feel the front bumper is so far away from the driver its like in the next zip code.

I feel the more dependencies and complexities we add to anything, ie. information systems, mechanical systems, even our livelihoods, the more mistakes and accidents can occur.
Having additional fail safes progressively lessens/eliminates bad decision pathways lol
Having good UIUX makes ownership experience better

Front camera can be retrofitted in the PFL GT however it is very complicated and time consuming. I had to abandon the idea, even left the old rear camera after retrofitting the new COMMAND.

done the front camera on my old '18 GTC Roadster. Plan for about 2000 bucks to do it. To do it cleanly you need:

- new grill
- camera
- control module (to allow for the input)
- shop time (bumper removal, wiring, programming etc)

for some reason I think I needed to upgrade the rear camera too if I recall correctly; if that is the case, the cost will be higher.

It will look OEM, but never really act like it. it does the job, but backing in is a LOT cheaper. In fact, if you look at the list for what is included in the 2020 if you want even a couple of them, it starts to get quickly into the "I shoulda just bought a 2020" territory.

I bought a 2018 GTR and the main thing that I missed was apple car play so I installed the android 10.25" HD screen - latest one. Its fully integrated with the car and wireless apple/android

Reverse camera pops up without needing to do anything and it works with the climate controls, audio controls and phone (both steering wheel and centre console

Plus it looks way better!

Kindly send me a link / business to add CarPlay and backup camera? I’m familiar with a Canadian company that provides the products.

Maybe you have an other option?

TIA.

Thank you for the link as I sort out in the US. And if I decide to do it.
Cheers.
