Hi there we already have ULSD here in th UK , I much prefer the non ulsd as you get more mpg but sadly now not available, other ways for better fuel consumpsion are going to be Bio-Diesel which will soon be widely available here in the uk. A mixture of diesel & cooking oil type product/oil seed rape .

Confused about fuel choices

Hi all,

I'm confused about diesel fuel choices. I have an 06 E320 CDI. I seem to recall reading in various forums and other places that:
  • ULSD is OK for use in all diesel cars
  • ULSD could damage O-rings in pre-2007 cars so an additive should be used
  • Biodiesel is not recommended for the CDI yet
  • Biodiesel is similar to ULSD in terms of its effect on O-rings, etc.

Should I be trying to find ULSD for my car? If it's OK to burn ULSD, why not bio? I really want to use that.

Thanks in advance,

Ed

Hi cyclerider,

I'm just outside of Ft. Worth, Texas. I haven't seen any ULSD yet, but there is bio not far from here.

Thanks, Ed

I have been, and will continue to add Red Line's 85+ into every tank, if anything for the lubricity, and then the cleaning (detergent) properties are just gravy. After all, Diesel is the only fuel sold that contains no additives packaged, unlike the various unleadeds that do contain cleaners, and lubricity improvers.. at $5/a bottle, and 4 tanks per bottle, I get some 2000 miles out of each bottle.. not bad.

Personally I would stick to the 500 ppm "old diesel" as long as I could, and only use the new ULSD if and when it is all that is available. Until M-B gives it's blessing to bio, I won't jeopardize my warranty.

Right now, Texas is beginning the conversion to low sulfur diesel. At some pumps, they're selling B15 mixed with 500ppm diesel. Eventually, they'll switch to the ULSD, and probably add biodiesel for higher lubricity.

I had a VW Jetta TDI. Upon the recommendation of a Mercedes mechanic I have been using automatic transmission fluid as a fuel lubricant every few tanks and it worked. The engine is quieter and it costs much less than other diesel fuel additives. Anyone else with this experience?

I have heard this from several reputable and experienced Diesel and MB mechanics, but only in mention for use on older Diesels.. like the 240 and 300D's.. not the new CDI's, though one of them did tell me that a quart in my tank every 10000 miles would clean it nicely.. I don't mind paying the $5/bottle for the RedLine as it only needs about 1/4 bottle for a 20 gallon tankful to treat my fuel.. I did a full bottle only the first time, and the engine only had about 3000 miles on it anyway, so that was probably overkill.. at 1/4 bottle per tank, I get some 2000 miles out of a $5/bottle.. not bad at all!

ATF as fuel lubricant

CE750: The reason I used ATF was the low cost ($2.00 vs $5.00 for brand name diesel fuel additives). It is OK to use ATF on a 4 year old VW Jetta TDI but probaby risky to do so to a E320 CDI. ATF is red and can easily be detected if used frequently.

Sulphur is a good lubricant and I believe similar to lead in gasoline in the 1970s. A big reduction in sulphur may reduce the longevity of diesel engines. Anyone read anything about this?

So, you are willing to risk a $55k dollar CDI by pouring in ATF because its less expensive? May be fine for that TDI, but I agree that its not a good idea on the CDI. I religiously use either Stanadyne or DieselPower! additives in all of my oil burners.

I wish there was a little more info around on how this new diesel fuel is going to affect us.

I plan on finally making my MB purchase before this year is over. I've been waiting for the diesels to start appearing in the SUV's. I was going to wait for the new GL in a diesel flavor but the poor design on the interior was a disappointment for me so I was thinking about the ML or the R which will come out with the CDI for the 2007 model year this fall. Also, the E320 for 07 will have the V6 made for ULSD ONLY where the current I6 will work on either fuel.

So that brings up a lot of questions . . . How well will the new 07 models do with fuel economy? I've heard there are additional economy robbing emissions components on them . . .PLUS the new fuel will have slightly less energy . . . what will the net result be on economy?

How about the current I6 E320 CDI (the car is really my first choice, followed closely by a fuel efficient SUV)? I know how that car does on the OLD fuel . . . how will it do when the only fuel available is ULSD? It won't have the emissions junk on it but there has to be a loss coming somewhere.

I just don't want to regret not buying the last of the "good" CDI's because I could be VERY happy with the current car.

Dude, get the Iron block, I6 CDI, and don't worry, the new Diesel will be fine in it, and if you drop a bit of quality diesel additive in every tank for added measure.. These new V6 CDI's are going to be (sorry if this offense) garbage.

I'm sure that when the I6 engine found in the CDI came out, owners of the then older, less technologically advanced engines said the same thing. The new engine carries the latest advances, will be more powerful and fuel efficient, has gone through extensive durability testing, and will certainly not be "garbage."

Sam, I'm curious as to why you say that? I've been trying to research the new V6 Diesel and just wonder why you are so "down" on it??
Thanks for any insights.

Note: If you have already covered this elsewhere, I would appreciate some links. Thanks.
