Exclamation 2005 CDI Intake Repalced

I just had my intake replaced at 60 000 miles. My service guy said that there were bolts rattling around inside the intake. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or if its a fluke. (Buy extended warranty! It pays for itself!)

Thanks
-Brad

I posted a photo of my intake not so long ago and no one took notice. It was leaking diesel from an O ring. Replacement of the defective O ring means the whole intake "ram pipes" had to be removed. It was done under warranty but the actual cost is around $700.00.

I would suggest everyone take their engine plastic shrouds off permanently so you can feel around the connections to see if they are weeping. The diesel engines are so well insulated small leaks would be hidden from view and dry up with the engine heat. When discovered the warranty is history.

Taking the shrouds off long-term is not good. They are there to help cool the engine and protect the delicate electronics.

"When discovered the warranty is history" makes no sense as regards whether dealer will fix leaks.

When dealer discovers missing engine plastic shrouds, however, warranty will indeed likely be history.

I would think the plastic shroud does more to keep the heat inside the engine bay rather than the reverse. Most of the wires are located between the shroud and the engine metal. If anything the removal of the cover would facilitate heat dissipation.

This trend started in the early 1990s I think for two reasons:

1) hide the wiring and make the engine bay looks tiny.
2) discourage people from servicing the engine and car.

Answer to your first remark:

If you are unaware of a leak you will not go to a MB dealer for warranty work including an oil leak from the intake.

Answer to your second remark:

I looked through the owners manual and see nothing about the act of removing the engine cover will result in voiding of warranty.

I need to tell all you good folks on this board that when I stated that I took the plastic shroud off I meant ONLY the driver's side. There are lots of high pressure tubes on the passenger side.

I stand corrected Ken.

I would consider engine noise insulation being one important function of those covers. Don't disagree with the two above.
