Oil Consuption

Hi guys,

I have a GL320 and my light came on to check oil level at next refueling.
The car has only 2400 miles on it and i was wondering if this is normal. Do diesel engines burn oil?? Or is this part of the break in?? If so how long till a diesel engine breaks in???

The oil consumption is probably a result of the break in (or possibly underfill at the factory). I would not worry unless it persists past break in. Diesel engines do not normally burn oil.

This is from a topic on the GL forum.

You can only estimate the oil consumption after you have driven a considerable distance.

You will find further information about engine oil in the "Technical data" section "

It does not say to what engine this consumption data applies. One can assume all of them at this point.
This is the link. I have not got my GL yet (arrives in a week) but I have found this International manual very informative. You can also search with it in the detail section. Link followshttp://www4.mercedes-benz.com/e/cars/gl-class/betriebsanleitung/flash6.html
Good luck!
My experience is that using, leaking, burning, or whatever else they may do to lose oil, is the norm and the ones that do not are the exception. This is my first MB diesel, but I have many years of driving, owning, operating, and managing many diferent diesel engines.

I've had four different CDIs. I've added about one litre (quart) of oil once in the middle of the oil change period (a bit less than 30 000 km, 18 000 miles).

The figures on the manual are extreme, mainly to protect the car manufacturer liability against some less than ideal engines.

I agree. 0.8 L / 1000km is pretty extreme. All the Powerstrokes I have driven have used 1 - 2 qts between oil changes. 3 of these were still running great with well over 200,000 miles when they were sold. The Duramax, less than 1 qt, so I have never had to add oil yet, at 22,000 miles. I know there are diesels that do not use oil. I just haven't found one yet. Maybe the GL 320 will be the first.

Trodas, I forgot to mention, there is a known oil sensor problem with the GL 320. You can read about it on the GL forum.

I have owned several diesel Mercedes, none of them used oil even up to the hundreds of thousands of miles.

I was just informed by my SA that in the next month there will be a TSB on the oil sensor. They are just waiting for the new model to come in. I have posted this on the GL forum

R320 CDI
I had mine come on twice during a recent road trip in my R320 CDI with about the same mileage. The first went away after I filled up, but came on again about 100 miles later. I checked the oil and it was more than halfway up the dipstick. I was going to call my dealer to have it checked out. As long as there is enough oil in the engine, I wouldn't worry about it until the TSB comes out.
