320 BlueTEC poll

ive *****ed and moaned about my 08 E320 BlueTEC. I got it back on Friday and was really impressed with the performance and I may (MAY!) have talked myself into keeping it. My tech wasn’t a lot of help when I asked what I should do, just a nice maybe so I’m asking you all the members what I should do. List Keep or dump. If you want to tell me why that’s fine too.

This is whats been done

replaced:
intake manifolds and swirl motor
timing chain
tensioner
EGR
oil cooler and seals

I also started on a 3,000 mile oil change schedule and I use Liqui Moly engine flush each time and I use the Liqui Moly DPF additive every fill up.

What say you all?

(I drove the Audi and wasn’t really impressed)

They are great cars for sure.I also have the 08 E320 bluetec.I say keep it.Mine has about 65,000 miles and I use rotella t6 5w40 CK4 with wix filters.I also use a bottle of comp cams break in additive just for a little bit of extra protection against wear.I also installed a new magnetic drain plug.I use the Liqui Moly dpf cleaner every 2nd tank or so and use stanadyne performance formula by switching back and forth.I never have any issues.Basically I have a new belt tensioner, belt, brakes done all around and new transmission lines in place.Absolutely magnificent car.

I’ve read various posts that some people did not like the idea of using the rotella because the ash content may foul the dpf but on the back of the container it said it’s suitable for engines with emission related systems, etc(not the exact wording on the container).I would not be afraid to use it but that’s just me.Rotella has always been a great Diesel engine oil.Thats the oil of choice for me anyway.I’ve also removed the plastic engine covers under the engine and on top since bluetec engines get hot in a hurry.

Ok, I’ve read the 10w30 oil is partly responsible for engine sludging on the BlueTec engines

I’ve never messed with 10W30 in the diesel before but I was thinking of using redline diesel synthetic 15w40 since it’s a ester based oil.I use rotella because it’s easily obtainable in my area but redline is harder to find here but I see it on eBay all the time. You can buy it in 12 quart cases.

Mine, OM648 powered seems to prefer 5w40 Mobil1 M series oil, since I work at a dealership I have access to all sorts of oils, have run everything from 0w30 in winter to 10w60 but all around the stock recommendation has been impossible to beat, works well from Texas heat to Montana cold?

After spending $2500 for new DPF for E250 BT, I will be even more careful with oils that I was so far.
I found Liqui Moly with 229.52, at autohousaz and am happy with it so far.
OP did not disclosure the mileage, but suppose the timing chain on those engines is million miles item, so why it was replaced.?
I have 2 Bluetecs and suppose to get rid of 1 of them.
The problem is I love them both

135,000 miles. Timing chain was 18 degrees out of spec

The engines are gold, it's the emissions crap that seems to be causing issues. I personally will be doing a EGR/DEF/DPF delete as soon as my warranty is up in October. Between that and 3k mile oil changes, I "should" be safe...

If I were keeping an OM642 powered car, it would have to ready for a FULL reporogramming and host of deletes. If intake flappers, EGR, DCR/DPF and stock mapping are going in the trash then sure. If you want to keep it in as stock condition there has never been a better time to take a real hit on depreciation and let it go. Personally I may do another OM642 powered car one day but plan on days of mods before even running it. Looks like my other OM642 is gonna total due to engine failure (not its fault honestly) and I see a Ford Transit tall type of cargo van as its likely replacement.

Bluetec726, I can related to you in that I've wondered the same thing, should I keep it or list it. I originally bought the car because of the great combination of power, fuel economy and hopefully engine longevity. My car (same as yours) has 271000kms (168000miles) and still running well other than some items I've had to deal with lately. As my needs are changing I'm tempted to sell it in exchange for a sporty/performance daily driver. I don't know yet but I'm leaning towards keeping it.

I see you've replaced the common items these cars run into (other than timing chain which I'm a little surprised about). You will eventually have to service the DPF as by design it catches residual ash and soot which would need to be emptied. If it's not damaged you can have it cleaned out for significantly less than a new one. So my suggestion to you is: if you really like the car, don't mind spending some money on proper maintenance and repairs and/or can do some (or most) of the work yourself then I'd say keep it. If you cringe at the idea of expensive parts, don't like chasing ghosts (diagnosing) or hiring ghost busters (mechanics who can get to the root problem quickly) then it may be a good time to list it while there are no issues. Just some things to think about. I hope that helps.

Best of luck!
