Replacing Chain Tensioner 2012 . GL350

Hi Guys,

I just order a new chain tensioner to see if can improve the rattling noise on cold start. 70k miles.
few questions and observations
1.- Just read the WIS and the instructions say basically take the old one and install the new one torque to 80. that's all
2.- If that is true ( I guess should be) the new tensioner will be on the closed position at the first start. you guys think is a bit risky to start the car with the tensioner basically on the factory position, can the chain jump and loss my timing ( Just afraid to break my car .... Again).
3.- after replacing the tension should I crack the motor manually? or just started as usual.
Not sure if that will fix my problem but is a cheaper way to start the troubleshooting, next step I guess will be replacing the timing chain (I'm not prepared for that but don't know if that can hurt my car in short or long term, just purchase the car in January )

Any advice to save my mind and wallet will be appreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like you have oil pressure extendable tensioner.
It will always retract when oil drips down. New one might hold for few days when high- mileage for few hr.
That said you don't have high mileage, so I will wait for confirmation that it really was the troubled part.
Just screw it in and start the engine. Don't rev it for couple of minutes.
At some models MB made tensioners that come extended and mechanics busted the chains forcing them in and that is why I advised getting WIS for the job.

I remember reading about a TB where MB installed check valves in the hydraulic tensioner circuit. Seems the pressure bled down and caused clatter for the 1st few seconds at start-up, usually at start-up, usually after an extended off period.
If it was my truck and out of warranty, I'd just live with it. There's never been, to my knowledge, damage done due to the clatter.

I'd install magnetic engine oil drain plug and see what you collect at an oil change or better yet at least one oil analysis from your favorite lab.

FYI, I've been running a Dimple magnetic plug for around 8 months and did at least three oil changes. Found nothing on the plug to date.
Also got the results from my first oil analysis from Blackstone, passed with flying colours. Though to be honest, the frequent oil changes probably have something to do with that.

I replace the chain tensioner and all went to crap.
remove the old one and get the new one in . Turn on the car and the neise was very loud. Leave the car running for 10 minutes and the noise never stop. Cycling the car on/off and never improve so I end reinstalled the old one and the car just rattles for few second on the start.
So I should leave the car running for more time with the new one to build up pressure? Or may be my chain is really stretched. Im about to travel 2500 miles ( and not sure if the car will hild or i shouldn't worry about it .
I attach a picture and video after I replace the tensioner

Video is in this link

Looks like new tensioner never extend. where did you buy it? I know the installation problem is crucial for oil flow, so maybe you have bad gasket? Was that blue tip on it when you install it?

I just remove the old one and install the new one, I bought from RM European parts brand Febi Bilstein, the old one work fine with just a bit of slap on the start like 2 seconds, this one was hell on wheels (if u saw the video) very loud and scary.
after I remove I try to push and pulled and feel really hard to pull or rotate without any visual extension at all also was full of oil (black oil so I'm sure coming from the engine)
I kinda purge before installing (soaking on oil and push few times)
The old tensioner can be disassembly if u pull a bit hard, u can see the internals, sping and something like a piston ( maybe is already bad, leaking the oil don't know ).
Notting blue on the tip may be is glare from the oil or the camera
Going to returned and get the Mercedes original part and see if that improve, or will leave the old until I'm ready to replace the timing chain.
So far is been working good with just some noise at the start.

I make a few calls and get a quote to replace the Timing chain from Mercedes dealer $2500, and a crazy $3000 plus tax for an Independent shop if I want to go that route.
Texas Price.

New chain at 70k miles? Hold your horses.
I took apart damaged 642 engine with 180k miles on it and even I could not measure the stretch, the chain looks good.

I`m order a new Tensioner and see if this time work, so far is working good with just the noise at the start, mostly cold start.
Dealer want $190 service fee for keep the car overnight and troubleshooting. may be will do that to see what they recommend.
Thank you .
