Oil cooler/seals change

Hi, I have a 2007 E320 with 179,000 miles. I’m bout to do an oil cooler change and seals. I ordered this off eBay (https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F233245816696)will this be ok to use? And what are the must know before doing this job and helpful tips and things to look forward too. Thank you! I’m also going to be doing some cleaning so is there any helpful cleaning tools/chemtool that would be best?

Don't forget to drain coolant before you start and take your time. It is time consuming job. I did it two weeks ago, took me 3 days from start to finish. Make sure you have correct torque specs for each screw. It is not difficult job, but lots of cleaning make it time consuming.

You also need this part: QTY:2; 6420910150.
And if you don't have swirl flaps deleted I would recommend to also purchase swirl flaps linkage:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Mercede...4AAOSwclFd8uiL

I would recommend everything from this kit except Exhaust Bracket and Engine Intake Manifold Adjusting Unit
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...kit-om642rrkit

any tips on how to remove the hoses? I just heard that sometimes they can be a pain and hard to replace and I’m not really trying to break anything. And I might have to do it outside because my garage isn’t really big enough.

Coolant part number: Q1030004 Mix 50/50 with distilled water.
If you order swirl flaps linkage then you no need 6420910150. Usually this parts come with linkage.
I didn't have any issues with hoses. Just be really careful with screws, it is very easy to over-torque and damage the threads since the intake is from aluminum.

This kit is way not enough based on the photo shown. From the photo of this kit you are missing a WHOLE BUNCH of O-rings for the throttle and EGR. Also since you have to take the thermostat off you want to replace the gasket as well.

I'm currently working on my 2015 GL350BTC and close to finish. I ordered the kit from FCPEuro and I ended up had to run to the local dealer to get some more o rings, including the O-ring for the coolant temperature sensor. For cleaning I basically got a 10 gallon Craftsman Tote from Lowe's and poured in 4 gallons of gasoline as a cleaning container. If you have some luxury you can buy a few gallons of carb cleaner and it should work better than gasoline in cleaning out the gunks.

How much coolant goes back in? A gallon? Thank you for your time also! I can’t wait to get started.

The kit I bought from FCPEuro has about 6-8 rubber gaskets and O-rings in total, plus the 6 tiny o-rings for the return connectors of the injectors. Besides that I bought another about 4-5 O-rings and like 3-4 gaskets from the dealer additionally. They are all different sizes. If you need I can gather all the part numbers if I can later, but I'm afraid yours might have different setup than mine due to the MY different.

I don't even see the 6 tiny o-rings for the injectors in your kit that's why I'm a little skeptic about it. They should be replaced since you will need to disconnect it anyways. The oil cooler doesn't necessarily need replacement as long as it's not warped. Check it with feeler gauge.

Here is list of parts I used. For thermostat only bottom screw has to go out. So you no need to remove thermostat, only one out of three screws needs to be removed.

Haven't needed to do this yet ( Knocking on wood All day long !!!).
Here is kit from reputable vendor:
https://www.idparts.com/oil-cooler-s...42-p-5146.html

Currently $91 plus shipping.
I think the swirl flap clips are the same as last item in parts number list above
QTY:4 N910143008017 , so add 4@$3.70
Also sells the socket for pulling injector lines off.

Looking closer it seems kit doesn't include all items on this parts list, but I think they are all available on the same page.

For the swirl flap, I'd suggest simply upgrade it to the metal link kit. They are sold on ebay. The only problem is that you want to make sure whether your link rod has sensor pickup. Mine has sensor pickup but I bought the one with no sensor pickup that's a lesson I learned...

I’m glad you said something I think I got the one without the sensor... (https://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Mercede...4AAOSwclFd8uiL) what did you do with the sensor or did you buy the one that had a sensor?

If your current rods are equipped with sensor pickup then you will need to buy the one with the sensor pickup. I bought the one with sensor pickup at the end. The sensor pickup is not removable so there's nothing we can do to it if you bought the one with no sensor pickup. Here's an example with sensor pickup. The sensor pickup on the rod is just a piece of metal (maybe magnet?) that will trigger the sensor when it gets close to the sensor.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-OM...oAAOSwvT5dFhuG

Again check your current parts. I know older models don't have sensor pickup but later ones do.

I’ve gotten to the part where I take my turbo out but the bolts connecting it to the exhaust won’t come off or move at all. I’ve sprayed pB blaster and still won’t budge. Any help on how I should take it off? I have an impact gun just won’t fix in the small space.

I used to heat up the bolts first but now I skip that and tend to make my own penetrating oil mixing trany oil with acetone in 50/50 ratio. You apply this from the end of the bolt. If the bolt sticks from the manifold, over an hour it will soak it in. If they dont stick out, I brush it into the hole.
Make sure your socket fits snugly on the head of the bolt. I tend to tap it on with a hammer before applying any torque.
hope this helps

You need a proper tool to do this. The bold head is E12 but most E12 sockets are 3/8" drive. I bought a long 3/8" extendable rachet from Walmart and cracking these bolts open was just so easy with it extended to the longest. When extended all the way, the length becomes about 2ft that's the same as some 1/2" breaker bar. Most 3/8 rachet sold on the market are pretty short. Be ware that those bolts are tightened to 20Nm+90 degree so the final torque is pretty huge, plus the exhaust rust.

Project Farm actually has one video comparing all penetrating oils including your recipe. You can take a look on youtube. The outcome was that the cheapest liquid wrench performed the best over all lol!

lol this is the part that connects to the flap motor to the rod. It's something you need to replace whenever you take it apart. Get it from your local dealer or an online vendor. You can also delete the swirl flaps.

what does a swirl flap delete do? And ok. I ordered and rod and links so that’s good. Thank you. I thought that’s what it was just had to make sure

Nothing just removes one thing that will cause repair cost. The swirl flaps are there for emission purpose only. The swirl flap motor is something that can fail due to the oil dripping from turbocharger if the seal goes bad, so do those plastic parts you are seeing driving the swirl flaps. As carbon deposit on the flaps it can get jammed that cause damage to those plastic parts. You will see the buildups when you remove the intake manifolds.

If you are replacing the rods, I'd recommend you get the metal rod upgrade. There are many sold on ebay. You just need to figure out if the ones you need are with sensor pickup or without. They are easily distinguishable.

Intake flaps make for better combustion at lower rpm. Meaning better torque and smoother engine running. If they do anything to the emission, it is side effect.
The system failure is due to gunk build up, who stops the flaps from moving. Deleting the controls at this stage is black tape over CEL.
Do the intake clean and you will restore engine performance.
