wheels can be same all around and yes you can downsize. might want to use the following site to calculate the actual speed you'll be travelling at if you're getting a different size other than OEM:

the 17 will fit ? some people say they wont becouse of front discs and callipers ?

I think that 18" wheels are the smallest you can go on the E550 as the front calipers are bigger, just ring a dealer they will tell you immediately, even try and sell you a set ??? They often have deals on for these sets.......
Most people with the e550 run 19" wheels as standard, but the car rides better on the 18"'s............

I used my stock 18's and put 235/40's all around for winter tires.
However, when these wear out I will replace with 245/40's all around instead as 235 in the rear is probably better in the snow but it is too weak on the dry / wet so need a better compromise...

I put some Continental WinterContact TS830P's on my E550 stock 18's with a stock 235/255 stagger. I won't get a lot of snow here in Vancouver but still need the softer compound tires for the season and wanted at least 255 on my rear for traction in the dry/wet.
I went with the Conti's because I have read nothing but negative reviews on Pirelli's and the only other brand I could find in the 235/255 stagger was Kumho.
I also wanted black wheels and had my stock OEM AMG 18's refinished to use for winter.

I did the exact same thing. Went 235/255 but I chose the Kumhos. Great tire for the price.Originally Posted by GerryMac

17's do fit on the stock 550 brakes, yes.Originally Posted by jmflamingo

I am (re-)using my old 17" winter rims from C230 Coupe, since the rims and tires are still in good shape. It wasn't worth me buying new rims/tires for winter wear. If/when I upgrade the stock 18" rims to 19", I will re-use the stock 18's with new winter tires.
17's will fit - and the drive was surprisingly good actually.

My first winter and snow with this car and no problems at all. Having winter tires and the traction control is great!
On my other Rwd car I need to disable traction control and enable "snow mode" to effectively drive in the snow but this car is great. Just drive.
No regrets whatsoever. Very solid winter driving car.

Hi Venom_55 - Good to know. Just bought my 2014 e350 cab about a month ago and we're in the middle of our second major storm. The first time I ended up ditching my car and walking 2 miles and now I barely made it home…time for snow shoes. The dealer is quoting $2400 for a set. Doubt I will go staggered. Definitely want to get the stealers to match the Tire Rack price.Originally Posted by venom_55

Good thread!
