Steering Wheel change issues

Evening, I am new to this forum.

I have a 2011 plate E350 coupe, I want to retrofit the new style steering wheel with the aluminium trim.

I swapped the wheel over, but none of the buttons on the new wheel, including horn and illumination work.

Now from my research I have been told 3 different scenarios and none make sense.

1) change the module from the old wheel into the new wheel?
2) change the contact plate? What is this?
3) can the new wheel not be installed then just programmed in via a master tech?

Your help would be appreciated. Thanks....

this forum is not of much help (much to my chagrin) to DIYers. No offense, but if you do not know what a contact plate is, then you should not attempt to do a steering wheel swap yourself. This is not because no one will want to help of tell you, its because it's a safety issue and not something to be taken lightly. Be safe. Recomendation, take it to a benz shop(non dealer) and have them make sure you swapped it right (and securely) and fix the issues you have. Best peace of mind you'll ever have. Good luck.

For a start am no newbie, I understand what the contact plate is as I have had both wheels in pieces. But what I don't understand is when people on this forum say change the contact plate from the original wheel I to the new one when the original plate is 4 stud and the new wheel is 3 stud. I attempted the change because it's a simple job in terms of mechanical... The issue lays with the coding. And considering this is a forum I would have appreciated a little help not to be spoken down to as if am someone with very little knowledge. One would say from my first post this is a very clicky place to be which is not a pleasant experience.

I simply wanted to know is there a pre-programmed contact plate?

The module from the old wheel certainly doesn't fit in the new wheel as there a different shape, I also understand that the module is linked and coded Into the steering column. I just wanted to know what other peoples experience was with this issue.

Clearly not the same atmosphere over here as it is on the audi forums.

Sorry I asked a simple question.

did you ever get this figured out Benjy08? Changing the module should do it. I think new contact plate is needed.

I think he can swap his stock one and test, if that does not work then the contact plate should do it. Read on another thread about this same issue.

What model did the new steering wheel come from?

I never had any issues with contact plates or modules on mine, just bolted in. Perhaps your wheel is different.

Unfortunately, this forum is mostly dedicated to cosmetics and not technical. Wheels, spoilers, fascias, wraps, etc.
If I have a technical issue, I Google my question. Generally I get a solution.
Google sometimes directs me to this forum.
Cannot help you with your steering wheel issue, but I hope you find a solution.

I had same problem, as far as I understood you correctly. I solved it.
You can't transfer contact plate to new wheel, because air bag is diffent. Do you have same style as in 2010 e coupe?
If yes, then simply change contact plate. I know the guy on eBay who sells them.
He will explain you correctly why it doesn't work, as I don't remember it was long time ago.
You probably bought newest wheel with new contact plate, many selles do so. He has old version.
