Hi. I love my 2021 E-Cab! What a car. I am wondering if anyone can explain the rear facing camera to me..the one on the trunk lid, that’s hidden beneath the logo. When does it pop open? Mine seems to be open when the car is not in reverse. It seems to be open when the car is in Park, and at other random times. People stop me often, in parking lots, to tell me my gas tank thing is open🤣. Thanks

 

I don't have a 2021 but that is not the way it should be. Do you have Park Assist? If yes, perhaps turn that off for a bit and see if the problem still occurs.

 

I picked up a 2021 E450 coupe for my dad last week and the sales guy specifically pointed out that the rear camera will always pop open when the car is in park. No idea why Mercedes designed it this way but it's not a fault and no software update can correct it.

 

Mine pops open when I get in the car and engage the car in drive with absolutely nothing behind it. So I always take off with it open. I have a 2021 E53 Coupe. I only want this open when I put it in reverse or I’m parking. Sometimes, when I’m driving in traffic, the car thinks I’m looking for parking and opens it randomly. To me this is a malfunction. 1) parking assist should be “on demand” 2) no matter how beautiful our cars are, when it takes off with it open, it looks like it’s a defect. I love the car, but I don’t love this feature. Whomever wrote this program must be “high”.

 

The first issue, popping up when engaging the car, seems indeed not right. The "randomly" popup in traffic might be not so random: I have it also sometimes, but then always there seems some activity around the car (a bike or so in the blind spot, or some car behind (or in front) off you who gets too close by, or when driving slow in cities it can be people crossing the street too close by your car). You might set the "Parking distance sensibility" somewhat lower (somewhere in the car settings), IIRC there are 3 levels you can choose.

My truck camera also opens at traffic lights and stopped in traffic. I have the dash cam and augmented reality nav options.

I also have a 2021 and anytime anyone I know drives behind me, they call me in the car or comment later that the camera pops open all the time when I am driving. Super annoying and no idea why it does that.... I only want it open when I back up or am using park assist...

 

Has anyone asked Mercedes why this is happening?

In just a few days I've noted a number of software issues that should perhaps be fixed at a suitable update. That's how this computer-with-a-car-attached thing works. The more comments MB get on something, the more likely it is to get prioritised for a bug fix in a future release.

I shall see if mine does this and if so, add it to my growing list.

 

In park, and ignition on, the camera is supposed to be open. This is in anticipation for your next choice: you may prepare to park in a parking spot, say to back up/put into reverse or to park - so the camera is already engaged. I've put it in park (ignition on) in my driveway, and the camera will be open. So I looked it up and yes it will be open by design.

An educated guess but the reason it's open before you move in reverse or park, is to give you an additional sensor for obstacles, or prevent any delay (giving you the camera as soon as you put the car into Reverse).
