Thinking of buying 1985 300DT w/ bad A/C
I really like the diesel W123's and I'm going to buy one here in the next couple of weeks. I need some advice, I'm seriously looking at 1985 300DT with bad A/C compressor, other than that the car has just been serviced and is in good condition. What realistically would it take to fix A/C and how much $ would I be looking at? Does any one know of any budget fixes? Is it possible to replace the compressor and recharge the R-12 or do I need to do the R134 conversion? I'm a fairly good shade tree mechanic and I'm confident I could do the work. If I didn't live in Arizona I wouldn't really care but 115 degrees is too hot to not have some relief.

Thanks for the info. I bought the car and it is great! I am new to MB diesels and I like it more and more each day. Going back to the A/C is there an easy way to diagnose the issue? So far when I activate the switch nothing happens, so I checked the compressor to see if it engages but it doesn't. Next I spun the compressor clutch disk and it spins freely and I found the system has pressure. What next, how can I get the switch to engage the clutch? Any help is appreciated.

I have a 85 300D with bad air. This is what I did. Bought a rebuilt compressor from ebay, for around 100.00. The rebuilt compressor was setup for r134, from Oreillys I bought a new A/C Receiver Drier / Accumulator and expansion valve the cost with 4 cans of r134 was around 145.00. I flushed the lines with A/C line flush and blew it out with my compressor. Installed the new compressor, drier and valve, ran a vacuum on the system for about 30 minutes, installed the r134 almost 4 cans checked for leaks none noticed and I get 36 degrees out of the vent, not bad for an 85 benz. Hope that helps.
