Outside Temp display

Hi, I have a basic question about the outside temp gauge. I replaced mine because it was not displaying anything. The display lights up when I turn on the headlights but no digital reading at all. The replacement display does the same thing. Is this a sensor issue? If the sensor is inop does the display unit show anything? Any input would be appreciated. BTW, thanks to this forum I was able to sidestep the speedo man's $125 fee for what turned out to be a 15 min job to repair the inop odometer. It's nice to have an outlet of enthusiasts to help keep these beautiful cars running nicely. I've always loved the looks of the W124 and finally have one in my driveway!

Does seem like the bumper mounted sensor, or the cable that runs from the sensor to the cluster is not right.

Out of curiosity, how did your remove the guage cluster to install the LED screen. My outside temp screen is broken and I am going to have to replace it eventually.

removal of cluster

The cluster removal is easy. I bought the MB tool for $18 at the dealer, but you could easily use a coat hanger. Make each tool with t-handle design. At the tip of the instrument bend the tip 90 degrees and use approx 1/4 to 1/2 inch as the distance point to make your bend. Insert the instrument, one on each side of the instrument cluster, (I insert the too medial to the upper corner on the top margin in approx 1 inch from the edge), Turn the instrument so the 90 degree bent portion can catch the top edge of the cluster and pull firmly. These clusters are only pressed into the dash. Once the cluster pulls out some you'll have to reach behind the cluster and unscrew the speed cable. Once this is done start disconnecting the connectors on the back of the cluster and the entire cluster will come out easily. Remove the two retaining screws for the temp display and pull it out. Replace with the "new" one and you are done. Reverse the steps and replace the cluster. I've got it down to 5 mins to get it out - it's that simple. Suffice it to say that my speedo project took a few tries so I got good at the speedo removal! If you have other questions let me know. Good luck.

I saw one once on ebay for $40. You might have better luck finding it again than I have.
