the design and engineering of these cars continues to amaze me,they are virtually ageless and bullet proof. This is my first ever picture of my car posted on this forum,so please enjoy a silver stock standard.
thanks for your kind comments guys. I have considered the clear side indicator lights but to be honest, for some reason i don't mind these as they are.And yes all the 300ce-24's sent to Australia came as topline fully equipt models only and that meant getting the 5-speed auto. This basically gives it extra long legs,as the fifth only cuts in at 80kms/h,cutting about 500rpm of the tacko, and this can be change back to 4th and then back to 5th simply by pushing the gear lever left click to 4th and right click back to 5th.All other gears are virtually the same as a normal 4 speed except 1st and 2nd are slightly lower in ratio, giving a slightly more responsive take off.
I have heard those trannys can have issues?, but if they work that extra gear would kick some butt. My brother's '90 CE has a m104, i think 92 was first year for sedans?
The m104 motor came in when the 300ce was replaced by the 300ce-24 in the year 1990 here in Australia. It was the same engine and transmission as in the 300sl. Admittedly, while it's nice to have the 5-speed auto,it's also the only thing to have caused me some problems.(1) 4th gear was being bypassed and going from 3rd to 5th and would only return by clearing the fault codes. They simply could not find the cause and it took about a year and a half solve. It was the over voltage protection relay. You can read in detail of my painfull ordeal in past posts.(2)The reverse gear began clunking when being engaged, this began during my 4th gear issue, this compounding my frustration.I was told it was worn, meaning transmission out.If you have to take it out you may as well overhall the rest of the gears i told them,so they did.I am happy to say that all has been sweet ever since and i don't expect any problems in that area for at least 200,000 kms.I think probably the normal 4 speed was more reliable though, from what i have read, but also,i can't help but feel i have had bad luck in this area, cause benz's are famous for durable transmissions and that 4th gear problem i mentioned was unique to my car, because the MB technical department was also being consulted over this matter and they struggled.
