lowered my car and front is too low

I have a 1992 400e and changed to vogtland springs and bilstein HD shocks. I have #4 pads in front and #2 in rear. THe front still sits a little lower than the rear and rubs on sharp right turns. It rubs the left inner wheel well. THe box on vogtland stated 300e, not 400e. I assume the 400e is heavier and that is the reason it sits lower. Does anyone have any suggestions?

yeah its probably because you have a 400E and installed 300E springs. but no need to make 3 threads about it

lots of cars
You should try a bump 5 pad in the front and if that dosen't help change the springs out and get some 400e springs. The v8 is too heavy for the 300e springs.

mb world seems slow and did not take my thread and now shows 3 of them. Anyone have a part number of a No 5 pad. It's not in EPC as far as I can see. THe seller claimed it was for all w124. The box stated differently.

1992 400E
As far as I know, the vogtland springs for the 300E and 400E share the same part number...which means that the springs will lower the 400E more in the front. I have the vogtlands on my 400E and they do make the car sit VERY low--even with bump-4 pads. I really think that vogtland should have different springs for the different cars--I didn't know that I was just getting 300E springs when I bought mine. (not that I don't like the lowness-it's just that the occasional rubbing can be annoying) oiy..

I'm probably going to switch to H&R's in the front since the drop isn't as low as Vogtlands on the new car. On my 300E my car was still slammed with Bump 5 in the fronts...

By the way ... Does anyone know if the Bilstein Sport shocks front and rear will fit the 300E will fit the E420?? Let me know!

Yeah to level it out put bump 5 pads in the front and bump 1 in the rear and having HD shocks in the rear lifts the car up a bit back there (which I purposely did, so take that into consideration.

1992 Mercedes 400E
Sunman, I have a 92 400E and Vogtlands also. Just shimmed the front again and now it's level with the back, with a height of 24.875" from the wheelwell edge to the ground. Took a 23 mm pad 201 321 12 84, sitting underneath ANOTHER 23 mm pad that was cut down to be a spacer donut only!

AFAIK the only pads for a W124 are 8 mm and 13 mm.

The 18 mm pads I have are 201 321 11 84.

Hope that helps.

I have a feeling that's what I'll be doing. I have a spare 23mm pad which i'll thin down to do this.

I don't get it.... what is the reason you drop the car when your going to use 23-28mm pads? IMO, you need to drop the car and roll the fenders. we all have/had the same problem...and you don't see me complaining...
...and why would you buy Vogtlands? you didn't do your homework, ask even Chris, he himself is going with H&R's on his new E420(that's just an example).

FYI, my fenders are rolled. If you read my first post, i stated it rubs on the left wheel well when making a sharp right turn. NOT ON THE FENDER LIP. The tire is still tucked with the largest pad. You're probably not complaining because you don't have any rubbing issues. You're also probably not complaining because you have a 300. My 400e is heavier. Maybe you're not complaining because you don't care about the grinding sound you get when making a turn. Or maybe you don't care that the undercoating rubs off when the wheel rubs. Maybe you don't live in a state like michigan where roads are sprayed with salt in winters. Maybe you don't care there may be a rust hole in the wheel wheel. I really don't know why you're not complaining.

The reason I went to vogtland is because after doing my research, most people felt it was a good quality ride. I already have H&R's on my 203 and I don't like them. Too stiff for me.

hahaha your funny man. i have all the problems you pointed out and I live in Chicago area so the winter is pretty much the same except you guys might get more snow due to Lake Michigan location and I'm still not complaining.

BTW. H&R's on 203? 203's overall suck so I wouldn't even bother to lower it.

H&R's aren't bad at all ... I'm the one who made all you guys all up on Vogtlands.

Chris,

I have the HR cup kit on my 203 and feel it's a bit stiff. Partly due to the michigan roads. I may consider switching to a different spring if this doesn't work out or wait till you get them on your new 124 and get some feedback from you.

I just ordered a set of HR sport springs from Tire Rack. I'll let you all know how it goes. They are on back order at the moment. These Vogtlands are for sale if anyone wants. 1000 miles on them.

Albert has a set of HR on his 400e but he cut a coil on them. He said the ride is really rough!

Sunman, I put a few miles today on the car with the 23 mm pad + 23 mm shim in the front. Today is the first day that the car is sitting level, I now have 24.75" from the ground to both front & rear wheelwell arches. The ride actually seems BETTER then before, very smooth, could be because the shock is now more in the correct range of travel. Overall I must say that I'm very satisfied and surprised that I can get that good a ride from 17" wheels and 215/45/17 tires.

Of course, this could all change, as I have received my rear camber arms from benzboy on a group buy and plan to install them this week. Right now I have no idea what pads are in the rears. I'll take pics for those that are curious.

Too bad the Vogtlands didn't work for you. Let us know how the H & R's ride compare with the Vogtlands!

Hey Guys,

I've been researching springs and I'll most likely be getting some H&R's for the new car since there aren't many applications for the 400E/E420. They are definitely a lot more pricey than the Vogtlands though but I'll see. I'll let you know my input on them hopefully it'll wont be that bad but then again I love the sports car handling feel. The 400E already has superb handling in my opinion.

So that means ... My Vogtlands and Bilsteins for the 300E is for sale. I have the springs off already and the two rear shock are out. I had a problem removing the front Bilstein struts because the shop over torqued them and the bolts are frozen. If someone wants to buy them and hopefully remove them themselves then they can take it off my hands so that way I can have extra money for the suspension on the new car...Let me know if anyone is interested!
