Swap a E320 Estate for an 300E?

So here's the deal, I put my '94 E320 wagon up for sale to see if it may get some bites. I have it priced at $5500. I ended up with the car from my teenage son who lost interest in it after few weeks. I spent most of the summer making the car near perfect. Oh yeah, I put considerable parts and plenty of time into it.

A guy is offering to trade his '90 300E straight across. My car has 200K, his is at 170K, both in similar condition. I would prefer the sedan as the wagon wouldn't have been my first choice.

So all things equal, I'm thinking the 300's were solid cars and don't have the throttle actuator, self-leveling or traction control widgets (to break). I'm concerned they may be head gasket eaters? I realize both older cars will have issues but any tips or thoughts on this offer would be helpful.

you would be crazy to ditch the Kombi especially since you just put new parts and time into the car. No brainer... keep it and you will fall in love with it.

i agree. why take a risk on a car with potential problems when you have a car that you know like the back of your hand?

(Washington, the state) that's funny, people think we mean DC.

This would be the first winter (Spokane) with this Polar White, Euro-Ambulance - Tank! Fun to come mastering drift car techniques. Yeah, I'm thinking the Estate buggy has more value as "different". The soccer mom appeal makes for crazy talk like tinting the glass and perhaps new paint? EEEaah, it's an old car! I do like it but now it's in the window of perfect - no problems.

The 300E private seller value on Kelley is $3000 where the great white whale rolls a $5,800 figure. Huh? That isn't really a concern, its about what you want but an interesting difference. He has the original window sticker with a $54,000 number.

I'm thinking the ol' "kombi" is a keeper, just need to throw some Blizzaks on her. Uh, what is a kombi? German word for ... spendy toy?

The wagons are super cool and look great with just a few mods and the utility is unsurpassed, so it seems it should be possible to learn to love a wagon. The lowered ones with bigger wheels and tires and a little tinting really do look very good. After all they have more space than most SUVs and they get respectable mileage.

Kombi is short for combination in german, but I think it is because the car is part sedan part utility vehicle.

I am in Ellensburg right now and my Kombi doesn't have traction control since it was a Cali car, but I run Michelin X-ice snow tires on stock rims in the winter and I get around town and the passes just fine. With Traction control you car will do awesome.

Tint the windows maybe smoke the tail lights and you will have one sweet looking and performing car. Trust me, it is a great utility vehicle that rides like sex on the highway, how can you loose?

Your son is crazy not to want this car. Benzes are super safe( I can attest to that) and are very comfortable to drive, and they get the looks. I wish I had a kombi when I was younger, since these cars are great for hauling outdoor gear, dogs, friends and they are great for camping.

95' E320 Wagon (gave to father) 15' VW TDI Wagon, 05' X3, 97' F150, 99' Buell S3
keep it

The 94' has a superior motor than the 91'. 24 valve twin cam, more HP. Traction control is a must in your area. This will be a less expensive car in the long term. Once you load some stuff and get used to the capabilities, you'll wonder why you were thinking of trading.

Thanks for re-affirmation gentlemen. I'm keeping the kombi. AKA the "Euro Ambulance" and the dread soccer-mom thing.

Hate the lame-o posts - "should I ...my car?", where the owner is a mindless idiot looking for others to make his decision. This one was tough, both cars are attractive but my two overhead cams finally pushed me over! I really like the pull this baby has and the wagon is well, growing on me. Hmm, except that roof rack. Some tuner kid was pushing on me going up a long freeway on-ramp. He wanted to play NASCAR so I demonstrated - six in a row, makes 'em go. I heard his turbo whine fade as I pulled away, in a wagon! It's a keeper.

Just ordered some Weathertech floor mats and mounted up some fresh Blizzaks. Bring on the winter, the Kombi has arrived!

Kombi, ha, it's fun to say.

Shadow, gotta ask about the pic below your signature. Is that bad-boy real or a photoshop concept? The other small shot of your combi (western spelling) looks closer to stock.

That rendering clearly is not a Mom machine. Me likey. With blacked out glass it would be a respectable Batmobile. OK, maybe I'm reaching.
