So I cut some holes in my car...

I got his idea from "2phast". The idea is to make vents in the metal strips under the headlights in order to allow more flow through the engine. I am now in search for a cold air intake to make the three hours of cutting worth while. Let me know what you guys think of it so far. I also threw in some free advertising

Front view.

It still needs a bit of adjusting to fit perfect.

So I was bored and I had some blue tape

5% tint = no see through for you

Would be a better mod if you had a V8.

His hood is primer black, a new hood I beleive.

Garfy, nice work on the mod! A suggestion:

Bring the holes to the outer edge of the trim panel like you did with the inner edge...it looks a little off balance at the moment, then paint the mesh the same color as your car! Lookin good!

^ Second zorros suggestion. If you have an extra set, and feel adventuresome, try and cut the inside edge (by the grille surround) so it leaves the same width of room as the outside edge (side blinker edge). It would flow better I think. Also, probably a ***** to do.

i hate to be the wet blanket here but your mod achieves absolutely nothing unless your car is highly modified and needs the extra air. but if that was the case youd need to vent hot air out rather than introduce more cold air.

yes, i am aware that you are not posting this as a performance mod.

what you have effectively done is increase the drag factor of your cars aerodynamics.

Will that gain anything or change the engine sound?
My friend did it to his GTI and it seemed to make a difference in acceleration, but most notably a difference in sound.

OOOOOH Cold air intakes that actually bring in more hot air than factory.

PEOPLE, these DO NOT work for the W124. It gets SO hot in our engine bays that the aluminum cover over the factory air filter actually deflects heat away. With these aftermarket ones, the HOT air is in DIRECT contact with the filter.

Common sense....the filter is nowhere near a cold stream of air.

Yeah, I noticed that. I forgot to take into acount the overlap of the grill...it can be fixed though. I am ordering a rattle can of my stock paint from towerpaint.com so hopefully it will flow better with those minor tweaks.

Thanks BTW

ahem ahem...if you own a I6 W124, then you would know how hot the engine can get. I did this mod for two things, one was to help the engine "breathe" a little bit more, the second was to provide a more free flow of air for a future intake installation. If I am not mistaken, that is two achievements that I got out of this. Thanks for peeing on my dry blanket though

I plan on trying to wrap it around and drop it just behind the passenger side headlight. I think this may be close enough to the vents I cut to recive enough cold air. I will be doing some close work with an MB tech to make sure I don't waste my pennies on this one, trust me.

Garf

If you want the coldest air then drop it down to the front bumper area behind the tow hook cover.

Remove the tow hook cover and that is your inlet area.

Below is how I feed the twin turbo air filter.
Ignore the shiny black piece as that is the intercooler / air intake plenum.

Let your newly cut openings just bring in air to the engine bay.
Suggest you leave the stock intake scoop on the drivers side next to the headlight in, as it will also bring in air.

I saw something similar to this on a C36. It looks like the only place that is far enough away from the engine to get "cold" enough air. Do you mind me asking what intake setup you have? I am looking to spend no more than $100-$150 on the intake, I can cusyom make the rest via Home Depot Thanks for the info

i really did drink a lot and i just cant control it.
the hole doesn't increase the air going into your engine so i'm not quite getting the "engine breathe a little more" statement.

i get the second part where you said you want to mount a cold intake in the region of the headlight, and i can see this as a viable air source. why not fashion the air intake scoop to divert the air to that general area as well when you do go that route.

the low intake is best, although if you drive through a puddle you run the chance of sucking up some water and hyraulicking your engine.

The area next to the passenger side headlight in the M103 for sure is THE ABSOLUTE hottest in the enine bay, it's right by the exhaust manifold guys! I know this first hand that the heat is ridiculuous there because I ruined two half HID kits before realizing the ballasts and igniters on that side needed to be wrapped in heat repellant material.

Trust me, stock is better, why do you guys think the air filter is on the opposite side from the factory?

Neanderthal, what's a hyrdalick? Sounds kinky!

I didn't say it cools the air going into the engine...I don't think. If I did, I ment to say it cools the engine bay. Even if this does absolutely nothing, I think it looks bad ***. Besides, I have it, you dont...just kidding. Seriously though, I think it is a mod that does not need justification other than the simple fact that nobody else that I can think of (other than Rick) has done it, therefore making it worth while.

I think I am going to re-route the current intake to the driver side vent and see if that helps at all. I just don't see that the current position of the intake could produce that much air to the engine I let you know how it goes

Would this not be ideal for the m119s? Isn't this the location of each intake for that motor? Would potentially be very helpful considering the lack of airflow under the hood of the V8 cars
