newbie ? on 94 e420 headlights

Hello,

I am complete newbie, just got a 94 e420 last week. Last 2 cars were audis and after driving my 420 from ATL to Denver I will never own any but a MB from now on. What a fantastic car.

Anyway, I have spent the last couple of days reading this forum looking for info on mods. Primarily I am looking to update my headlights and wheels initially and thus my questions. Can someone tell me whether the bosch euro headlights are a significant improvement over stock? Is the appearance different?

Also any recommendations on wheels? I don't want to get into replacing springs at this time but would like to get wider wheels.

Thanks for any suggestions

I'm not the tire specialist, but I can assure you that the Euro lights are MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH , and one more MUCH better than the US version. They are a little different in appearance, but not much. If you have headlight wipers now, and want them when you go Euro, you have to buy a new wiper (maybe or maybe not a new motor?).

Good luck, and enjoy MB! Save up for a new SL 55 with a Renntech 670hp edit ! Then you'll refuse to even look at another car!

P.S. You'll notice my car does not have euro's. Why? Several reasons, long stories. Bottom line, I want them. I have seen them in action in a newer W124 4Matic.

Thumbs up

Having just purchased a '91 300E, I too am looking into headlights. What I've gathered so far is that one should stick with either bosch or hella - but I'm not sure of the differences between the two. As far as headlight performance, both are supposed to be far superior to stock american spec. With regard to wheels, I just bought 17" AMG monoblocks with Yokohama AVS100s from tire rack. Looks great, drives great and doesn't look too aftermarket.

I don't think that you would need to update the headlights. Your E420 was the first year of the last facelift for the W124 design. Your car has new headlights to go along with the facelift and I think that they are the european model headlights. If you take a look at a '93 model the headlight and the foglight housing are seperate but in yours they are the same just like the european models. For your car you really only need a good set of wheels, try the 17" AMG's from the CLK430.

Euro Headlights and '94-95 E320

Euro headlights will fit perfectly in any 124 body car. They are built by almost all the German headlight companies for Mercedes. The light output is different because of the lens design which purposely rises on the right to illuminate road signs. They use H4 bulbs and can accomodate 80/100 bulbs safely. The all glass lens o.e. headlights on the '94-95 124 is not the same as the o.e. headlight sold worldwide (Euro headlight) but does use the same wipers and motors. The wiper motor shaft grommet is from the 126 Class headlights. The trim metal required is also the same as found on the '94 E320. When installed on later 124 body cars the curved sheetmetal of the hood overlaps the inside corners of the oblong light. To see a before and after picture of Euro's on a 124 prior to 1994, e-mail me at pkmaven@hotmail.com and I will send you a jpeg. P.
