Grinding noise when in gear, foot on brake

Help!

There is a cycling grinding noise that sounds like its coming form the rear of the car when I am in gear and my foot is on the brake.

Does not make the noise when I'm in park or neutral with foot on the brake.

Anyone have an idea what it could be?

nope, definately not brakes creaking. It's not a constant grind, more cyclical..not perfectly cyclical though. I'm going to have a looksy under the car when gf is operating it to see if its anything in the exhaust system. I had an exhaust leak in my old W124 and this sounds nothing like that however.

is the grinding noise at engine speed? does it only happen when in drive or park? what happens when the car is moving? if if only happens when in drive or park when the car is stationary then it sounds like the gearbox, have you checked the fluid? should be on the dipstick to the rear left of the engine you have to pull the lever upwards on the dipstick and then remove! check and let me know the colour and the quantity!

It's only when car is in drive.

I just changed the tranny fluid so it's full and red.

Sounds funny, but have you checked the parking brake? I don't mean on the dash -- the shoes.

Take a look underneath your car and have a look at your flexdisks. There are two, one up front and one connecting the driveshaft to the differential input. They wear out and usually cause hard upshifts, but if badly worn it could also vibrate when in gear on the brakes causing the noise your complaining of.

hi, the only thing i can think of is the pump inside the gearbox or something to do with the torque converter!! has the noise just appeared? or has it been there for a while?
